OK, we went through the Ruger #1 afficianados, and although I think they're a fine gun, my real interest is old single shot rifles.
Are there any others here, who collect and shoot the old singles from the late 1800's and early 1900's?
My interests have been towards the Marlin Ballards, but I love all the others too. Stevens 44 1/2 + 44's, Winchester Hi and Lo Walls, Remington Rolling Blocks + Hepburns, Aydts, Comblains, Hopkins & Allen, etc. As long as it's old and neat, I love them!

Here's a picture of an old British Farquharson custom rifle built by Al Lind at the ACGG show. I love those Farquharsons!
sorry 'bout the bad image.

I have two Peabody ( outside hammer guns ), one is a Sporter in 45-50 Peabody centerfire that stays snug in the safe. The other I picked up in bad shape, was a 50 cal rimfire Civilian carbine that I reworked. Removed years of neglect and rebarreled to 45-70, got a replacement rimfire breechblock and centerfire fireing pin, from Dixie gun works and modifyed it to centerfire. I absolutely love it!

Also have a Stevens 44 1/2 punched out to .357 max. It makes a fun little black powder cartrige rifle. :)

I've got a Shiloh Sharps Sporting No. 3 in .45-70, a Pedersoli Remington Rolling Block in same, and an original Winchester Hi Wall that I recently inherited. Unfortunately it has been made into a 1950's style Varmint rifle in .219 Zipper. I'm going to send it to Ballard Rifles and Steve Garbe to bring it back to original form. I still haven't decided on caliber yet, but I'm leaning toward .38-55. It has a gorgeous piece of AAA Walnut that they may be able to salvage, as it has a huge rollover cheekpiece and Weatherby style flared pistol grip.

The British stuff is my favourite. Snider rifles at the moment are my main interest. I have 1864 and 1871 vintage .577 Sniders. I want a few more.

The old Ballards, Sharps, Remingtons etc. are all very nice as well. I would love to own any number of these old rifles.

All I can say is WOW Alyeska! That's a beautiful rifle! I don't think I've ever seen a Fahrquartson quite like it.
Here are a couple of my favorites from my safe.

I really should get one of those cameras but I spent the money on rifles. I have 3 Stevens, 3 Martinis, 1 Remington rolling block, 1 Savage, and a Ballard-all single shots. There must be some reason for repeaters, but I haven't found it yet. 2520

2520,
Good question! I love my old Marlin lever action repeaters, but they don't have thos classic lines like a single shot rifle!
Regardless of maker, the single shot rifles are all appealing to me.

That's another thing I love about old single shots. A guy could collect just one brand, such as Rolling Blocks, Winchesters, Stevens, or Ballards, and develope an entire collection consisting of a few dozen guns, and not have two completely alike.
Some makes, you could have a hundred, with no duplicates easily!

Kind of funny how things turn out sometimes. Without going through the whole history of single shots I have or once had, my collection now has a example of several different kinds of single shot actions: Falling Block (Ballard), Piviting Block (Stevens), Rolling Block (Remington), Swinging Block(Martini). and Break Open (Savage). I didn't start out to do this, it just worked out that way. You are correct in your statement on collecting. You could start a collection of safes as you tried to find all the different variations of the Stevens Favorite just for example. Just about the time I think I have seen everything I find something different usually somewhere that I didn't expect to find anything. Keeps me going to gun shows and out of the camera shop. I once had a large number of cameras too. 2520

If I didn't show some restraint, I could easily be in the poor house, just buying old single shot rifles that I like!
There are a few variations on the falling block style action also. Some fall straight down, some fall down at a angle, some fall and cam back. It's amazing to see the various design changes for the different makers.
I have Ballards, Stevens 44 & 44 1/2's, Rolling Blocks, Hepburn, Winchester Low & Hi Walls, Hopkins & Allen, Ruger #1, Comblain, and an Aydt. They're all a bit different, and each has something about it that makes them unique.
