View Full Version : Remilitarizing Surplus Rifles

During the 1950s and 1960s a multitude of surplus rifles were "sporterized" to varying degrees. I have spent some pleasant hours remilitarizing some of these rifles. As long as the metal was not cut it is fairly easy to restore these classic arms. The local gun shops get in '98 Mausers and Springfields that have had the stocks cut down and they sell for decent prices. There are original stocks available and when remilitarized these guns are worth much more. Anyone else restoring these fine guns? All the best...

Did my share of hacking and chopping years back - haven't rebuilt or restored any, though.

Does make it tougher to sort out the originals from the rebuilds...afte two or three sales, will usually be trying to pass itself off as all original, A good restoration, using the right parts will pass inspection...but are some people out there who swear they have a unique stock/action combination.
Might be nice to mark the rebuilds under the butt plate or in the stock channel.

Gil,
I've certainly chopped up my share of guns, but,so far,I've not tried to patch any back together.
But I haven't chopped any in the last 30 years.
All that I do now,is have custom mounts made to install optical sights on these old Treasures. I can remove these, and return to origional condition.
