Hopefully , Marshall , and/or some of the expert crew can shed light on this .

There is a quiet revolution going on within the field of firearms ; that is generated by those who place high store on Lever Action Rifles , and the spirit of the American West that they symbolize .

It is , at once , a reawakening to the technical efficacy of fast handling lever action rifles ; and to the internal-ballistical advantages , of hardcast, big caliber, big meplated bullets .

As we non-engineer , non technical types try to tear and compare various hardcast bullet attributes , most of us stumble beyond "velocity" , "bullet wt." and "energy" concepts and try to orient on into Sectional density , Meplat size , and the ability of the bullet to break heavy bones , and penetrate .

Without getting all mathematical , and Phd. level in Physics , We could sure use a sort of ball park formula for those who fell asleep in Physics class .

Something like , " Well , in getting a handle on penetration , --- about 30% of it is the size of the meplat , about 40% of it is Sectional Density , and the last 30% is the weight of the bullet ! " ( Grabbed these right out of the sky , so don't throw rocks at me ) .

Maybe I'm trying for something that's got too many variables to be meaningful , --- but something like that would sure be useful in trying to select a bullet for a specific use .

This is getting to be the best Site in the field , Keep up the good work . ------ Highest Regards , MMCONCOLOR ( Old handle was MMCOUGAR ) .

The solution is right here on this site.

http://www.beartoothbullets.com/rescources/calculators/php/penetration.htm

This is part of the suite of ballistics tools that can be found on the Beartooth site. As stated, penetration depends on many, many things NOT related to the attributes of the bullet itself, but this calculator will give you a good idea of how different bullets compare.

Have fun!

What is Metplat diameter?

Meplat is the flat nose area of the bullet...usually a cast bullet. The big flat "table top" on the nose. Not all bullets use this flat, but many cast bullets do.
