I had a 44 mag Marlin rifle. It stomped. Not kicked, stomped. There is a 94 Winchester AE 44 mag with black synthetic stock and forearm at a local pawn shop. If you have shot both, how does the 44 mag Winchester compare on recoil? Thanks, Taylor

I haven't owned both, but I can say this from shooting both the Win 94's and Marlin 336's, that for some reason the Marlins kick me harder, and are more uncomfortable to shoot than the Winchesters.
I honestly don't know why.

From what I have read the Winchester wieghs less than the Marlin, and the synthetic stock weighs less than the wood stock.
So - you might just just get stomped worse. I suspect the weight difference will make felt recoil much greater on the Winchester.
But then again I might be way off base.

I traded for the 44 mag Winchester rifle. It shoots very good groups. And like you said, the recoil is not as bad as the Marlin.

I have a win 94 trapper (16in. barrel) 44 mag, it's light even with a 1.5 to 4.5 shotgun scope, under 7 lbs.. I shoot 240 grain Nosler's at max load. From the bench recoil is very tolerable, and I DON'T like recoil. From standing, kneeling, or other position no problem. I've never shot a Marlin, so I can't say. However, I'm really impressed with my Winchester. (first one I have ever owned, said I would never own anything but a Marlin) Mine is real accurate also, with the Nosler's, like 1.25 MOA at 100 yds on 4x setting. Also there "was" this deer that was standing at 140 yds that thought this was a 100yd rifle. ( I thought the deer was at 75 yds, bad judgement, sorry) Big hole in, much bigger hole out.

Taylor, I'm sorry for the duplicate question. I've just got to ask you to expound on that comparison. I just put a 94AE on hold today. I probably will have the Marlin sold before I pick it up, but who knows. Perhaps I'll be in a position to do a side-by-side myself.

Well you can compare your Marlins to the Winchesters and you will find pro and cons to both . I have Marlins and Winchesters.
I must say that the 94 AE in 44 Mag is a compact strong little rifle that will fit in the back of your ATV, is just great for dogging through heavy bush as you can carry it all day ,and it is short to get you on target for that quick snap shot.
For quick short range fast shooting it fits the ticket , where for open range and iron sites-its not worth a dime.

I probably should have made it clear that I was referring to his comments here, and in another thread, that his Winnie had/has LESS recoil than the Marlin...
And like you said, the recoil is not as bad as the Marlin.

Sorry.:)

When I got the 44 Winchester, I went to the range and shot 40 rounds through the rifle. The bullets were 240 grains over 24 grains of H110. This is my standard hunting load for my 44 Dan Wesson revolver. They did not bruise my shoulder. With the 44 Marlin, my shoulder would have been bruised. I don't know if it because the Winchester comes with a rubber recoil pad or not. Except for recoil, the Marlin was a fine weapon. It was accurate, the action was smooth, and there were no jamming or loading problems. The Winchester is a fine weapon also. But I do not like the trigger. I guess I have gotten use to reworking the Marlin trigger down to about 3 1/2 pounds.

Can any of you tell me how reliable the two rifles are? Is the Winchester 94, in .44 reliable enough for use in home defense or bear defense in the woods?

Thanks!

Speaking from having levered about 3000 rounds through my 44 Mag 94AE Trapper, I would say I would trust the rifle. How ever . I would have the reciever cleaned once in awhile by a smith.
For Bear defence I would use a heavy reload and aim high in the chest where the vitals are.
The little trapper fits nice in the rear box of the ATVand I like it for dog puching . How ever for bear hunting , I use the 45/70 guide gun.In the fall , I want something that will traval through some fat and get the job done quick.
Some folks use a 243, and I have seen a few bears fall to the good ol' 30/30.
I had a bear come at about 20 yards , and thus like the idea of a big hole darn quick.Him Mad- me scared.

Just saw under another thread where a lad said his 44 Marlin had a 432 barrel.

Well does that bake the cake.

I can shoot .429 bullets out of my 94 Winnie trapper all day and end up with a big smile.
Now with a new Marlin a fella want to make sure he'd not get his finger caught between that bullet and bore, when he pulled the trigger!
