What are the restrictions on a pistol for a cowboy shooting event? I know nothing about them, but they are really gaining popularity and my interest has been sparked. I don't think I would be into dressing up and all that, but I love shooting the Marlin 1894 in 44mg and my ruger super blackhawlk, its single action would that qualify?

mattpair...your blackhawk is legal in the modern catagory. CAS (cowboy action shooting) is restricted to single action six shot revolvers of the western era or copys of such. Generally, the cut off is nothing designed after 1895 is allowed. When the sport first got started there wasn't much on the market in these types of guns but there was a lot of ruger blackhawks, which is a pretty close reproduction of the Colt SAA, so they are allowed. You might be interest to know that a CAS shooter who goes by the alias 'Tequila' won the world championship several times using Ruger Blackhawks. Pistols are split into two catagories. Traditional catagorie has no adjustable sights, modern catagorie has adjustable sights. You need four guns to compete. A lever action rifle ( your Marlin is perfect), two revolvers of .32 caliber or larger and a shotgun typical of the era. Most people use a double barrel 12. Take note that automatic ejectors are not allowed. These weren't invented untill the 20th century. Extractors only. You can use a pump shotgun but it has to have a hammer like the Winchester 1897. Norinco offers a copy for about $350 or you might find an original by combing the pawn shops.
If you would like to drop by our CAS web site and ask a few questions, please do. There always a warm welcome waiting for a newcomer in the world of CAS! Drop by and look me up..my cowboy alias is 'Will Pluggum' www.cascity.com

I would think there wouldn't be any restrictions on cowboy shooting , i mean after all it's only fair seeing as there wasn't any restrictions on what you could use for Indian shooting long ago . It's about time those cowboys get what they got coming to them.... oh you mean .... never mind.

( intended to be tounge in cheek ,even if it does make an Ironic point.)

I get it. BWHAHAHA! There weren't any restrictions at first but the judges were having a hard time figuring out who won when one guy used a lever action and the next guy up used an UZI.....and the body count was getting out of hand...

Can I dress like a native American and actually shoot cowboys?

Yep...got tossed from a combat match when at the start of a sstage, I put a sign around my neck that read "Bad Guy" and shot only the targets with a badge or an "H" on them.

You CAN dress like a native american but I'm sure theres penaltys for shooting the other contestents. Probably add 10 seconds to your time or something like that. :p
We got the same sense of humor, ribbonstone. I'd sure like to have a couple of beers with you someday...... ;)

Cool..will restrict the shooting to the hostage and lawman targets (an maybe a horse cut out or two).

To the to the orignial question:
Yep...offical matches have a wide variety of sub-catagories and the home sites of the biger clubs will get you to the rules and regulations.

Do seem a little arbitary at times, but the intent is to keep things on an even playing field.

Some day I'll tell what happened when my friend Jose showed up at a "serious" combat shoot in black PJ's, papa-san hat, a Tok. pistol, and an AK for the side match....not now though, he's still into the shooting games and it may get back to him.

I see...it's the old "skeleton in the closet" deal. We'll just wait on this one until we can swap storys down at the Longbranch saloon.... ;)
