Anyone loading for a Browning BAR? I've got one in .30-06 and was wondering if there is anything unique that needs to be taken into consideration when working up loads for an automatic.
Thanks

Not really, firstshot. You need to make sure that you seat your bullet so that you are within the COL guidelines (same as with any magazine fed arm), and you can't "low load" a semi without running into the problem of misfeeds. But follow the reloading manual guidelines and load 'em up! The Browning BAR is a very strong, reliable action that will serve you well for years.

I looked into the same thing a few years ago to load for a buddy of mine's Rem 7400. What I have learned is that slower burning powders are hard on the system, and are reported to make cycling more difficult, as the pressure peak required to cycle is too far down the barrel. Medium powders, with a burn rate equal to say around IMR 4064, suppossedly work better.
There are a few loads, Federal high energy, and probably the Horn light mag, that say on them, "not for automatics", more than likely just for this reason.
I have yet to try this out on his rifle, even though I was told him I was willing, as when I went over all of the how's and why's I reckon he got a little intimidated. Oh well.
I look forward to hearing your results.

We once had a Browning Bar in a 270 caliber, given to my wife but was to heavy for her at the time. Anyway, one must full length size all cases and trim to proper length. I have a beautiful (burl walnut stock) BAR that likes the Federal ammo with the Trophy Bonded Bear Claw bullets in 230 grain. I don't hunt with this rifle though, its just for the weekends at the rifle range.
