Ah,at long last, we can kill something.
The hogs and turkeys had other ideas.
We have thousands of turkeys on our lease and 7 of us tried our hand in North Texas on Saturday morning.
Only problem, the Toms were all with their girlfriends. All of them.
I had about 50 of them 75-100 yards awayat one time or another, but they wouldn't come to a call.
I usually carry a 22-250, but I wanted to be a "good sport" and brought the shotgun like everyone else.
But Jim Ackerback found one as well as three others guys.
Me, I ended up repairing hog damage to my feeders.
This is my solemn oath that I will never go to the lease without a rifle.

TPV...

We hunt them with just about everything down here in South Texas. Our season opened the week before yours and I've only been one afternoon. Just too tied up to get free.

I took a fellow and he missed a very nice tom at about sixty yards with his 38-40. He uses cast bullets and blackpowder in his Win M92. I was using my 444 with the Lee C430-310-RF traveling at about 1450 FPS.

In my neck of the woods the turkeys are finished responding to any calling by early to mid March. Our hens are nesting by the opening of the season.

I can't shred on my place from the end of March through June without the fear of whacking a polt or fawn, so work is over for a bit.

I do a bit of varmint hunting for the next few weeks. I kill anything that will eat a turkey egg or fawn.

Know what you mean!
Wild turkey is one of the few wild meats that I like. This week-end is a "honey do" but the following week-end is mine.
I have a mind to shoot 2 or 3 since the cupboard is bare.
I tried sending some pics but the file is too big.
I think its time to set the trap, I have some smart pigs that have got it "figured out". They dig out the legs of the feeders until they fall over, and then pig out. I do anchor the feeders but I think I'll go back to hanging them to make them pig free.
You'll may talk me into another lever gun. I passed on an old 94 30-30 that still had the ring on the receiver.Steel butt plate and all. That would make a good pig gun too. If I find the right one this weekend, I might buy one.

You guys are getting me stoked!

Bringing the steaks for the outdoor grill and a satchel full of ammo, Tom - maybe we can thin them varmits out a mite. If you ear tag the critters knocking over the feeders, it will be easier to know which ones to shoot!

See ya Monday!

The long anticipated hunt with tpv on the Jack County lease came about last week. Weren't able to put in more than an afternoon and morning hunt, due to pressing business. Enjoyed the abbreviated hunt, regardless.

TPV had to show off and neck shoot a jake at about 150 yds with his 22-250. I tried several times to put the hurt on something with the .22 Hornet with no results. Thought the long trip out might have jarred the scope settings off, but a short range session proved it was all shooter error!

No hogs were seen - coyotes were heard but stayed hidden. Racoons and armadillos were tempting targets in slow times, but were left unmolested. Lots of deer were seen. If the weather holds and doesn't dry up too badly, should be a great season for the next couple of years.

Sure had lots of fun and Tom is one of the good guys! Look forward to busting more caps with him in the future.
