This text originally appeared under Leveraction Rilfes... I received a couple of questions about it and thought it might make the basis of a good topic.
I wanted to properly mount my Bushnell on my 444P as when I received the low rings I just slapped them on to see what the sight picture looked like and how much clearance I had for the hammer extension.. This was the first order of business today as I'm leaving on a hunt in the morning. I wanted to add the shim as the hammer is just a bit too close and I also thought I would take pictures of the process for whoever might be interested.

Here are the materials.
http://cuero.nodial.net/~reamy/firearms/scope/shim.jpg
I went with a full length shim being this is a one piece base. I cut holes for the screws to prevent the lightweight brass for torquing as pressure is applied to the screws.
http://cuero.nodial.net/~reamy/firearms/scope/loctite.jpg
Loctite is being applied to the screws for the base.
http://cuero.nodial.net/~reamy/firearms/scope/alignment.jpg
Alignment is being checked with the dowel.
http://cuero.nodial.net/~reamy/firearms/scope/compound.jpg
The lapping compound is being added to the rings for polishing.
http://cuero.nodial.net/~reamy/firearms/scope/polished.jpg
Irregularities has been polished out and the rings are ready for a firm, even grip.
http://cuero.nodial.net/~reamy/firearms/scope/clearance.jpg
I measure a point on the scope/mounts and make note of the reference. While cleaning the rifle, I can quickly reference the measurement with a feeler gap gauge and head off any recoil induced problems..
http://cuero.nodial.net/~reamy/firearms/scope/finished.jpg
The job is finished. I now have .010" clearance between the eye bell and hammer extension vs. my original .002" of clearance. I've also have complete confidence that the scope and mounts will handle the heavy recoil of my BTB rounds.
