Need some help...was interested in mounting an IER Leupold Scout scope on my Marlin but was wanting to know where exactly will it put the scope. Which screw holes does the 1 piece QR base utilize on the gun. In looking at the base online it appears it has three screw holes...I want to know if it mounts the scope forward on the receiver and barrel so the recoil doesn't smack my face? Any info is appreciated.

The IER or 'scout' scopes go well ahead of the receiver.

Look at this:

The front of the scope base goes into a block that fits in the rear sight dovetail.

If you hit yourself in the head with this type of setup, something is seriously wrong.

HA HA!! Mike, you are TOO subtle!!!

JnAlaska - I think what Mike is refering to is that regardless of the manufacturer, an IER scope is designed to be 9 - 17" from the eye (Intermediate distance), and that sorta precludes getting smacked by the eyepiece due to recoil.

I know that does not answer ALL of your original post, But you might try e-mailing the company and seeing what that gets you as an answer. Sometimes it do, sometimes it don't, but it's worth a try, right?

It seems obvious a scout scope mount will mount any scope farther forward versus a standard mount. Other than that, what advantages and/or disadvantages does this provide me as a hunter? Will I also then have to buy a "scout scope" for use?

Sorry.... misunderstood you. As nfmMike said, the eye relief on the IER scopes is such that the mount has to be forward of the receiver.

If you just want to use a conventional base with a long eye relief scope, try one of the low-powered Leupold scopes. The fixed 2.5x is a good choice, or the 1.5x5 VX-III if you want a little more power. Either will give around 5 inches of eye relief, and can be mounted as low as you like.

Hope this helps. If that still doesn't answer the question, try to find a picture somewhere so we can see what you are considering....
