Over at Marlinowners.com there is a thread which discusses the Marlin 475 Linebaugh and the fact that the operating pressure for that cartridge tops out at about 55,000 psi. Is the Marlin 475 built aroud the same action as the 1895 45/70? I thought that safe maximum pressure for that action was around 42,000 re: the 450 Marlin?? I have to admit I am more than a little confused on this point, but not enough to load my 45/70 up tlo 50,000 PSI.
All comments are most welcome.
The title of the thread is:
"50 Smith & Wesson in 1895 BigBore?"

My real concern here is that the 475 Linebaugh operates at a much higher pressure than the 45/70, and yet Marlin seems to be using the [same] action for both??? So, where is my thinking fuzzy on this?

Has anyone calculated "Bolt Thrust" at that kinda' pressure? Would you really even need that much pressure in a 45-70 load anyway? The current crop of high powered 45-70 loads are pretty stout as it is....
I think anyone seriously thinking about pushing a 45-70 near those pressures - even remotely close to those pressures, needs to go very carefully, indeed.
Get a LONG roll of string if you ever decide to shoot something like that - and a ballistic nylon blanket to cover the rifle before firing it remotely... ( Helps to find all the pieces if it breaks! )
GOOD LUCK!

I think the Hodgon Annual Manual shows that for both the 350 grain and 400 grain bullets, there is only about 1000 fps difference between the Marlin and Ruger No. 1 loads, even though the Ruger loads top out at about 50,000 CUP.
For me personally, any benefits gained by that extra 100 fps are outweighed by the risks in attaining them. A 400 grain bullet at 2000 fps at under 40,000 CUP is sufficient for anything I will ever encounter in the forest.
