In the last 25-30 years, we are not seeing anymore ring tailed cats in the area around North Central Texas where I hunt.
Just wondered what others have noticed.

Also, red fox populations are down. Plenty of greys but no reds.

Que Pasa?

Killed one out near Junction a couple of years ago, in the bathtub of an old, rather decrepit mobile home that had been abandoned on the deer lease.

Nasty creatures.... not sorry to see them go!!!! Should have seen the mess they left in the trailer.

Well now I know where they all went. How about reds?

I don't mind them that much and my dog loves running them around the barn (ringtails). It has been my observation that the owls are real hard on them. Of course everything is a bit cyclic in nature and right now I've got a lot of owls and few ringtails. It will come back around the other way.

Actually I kind of figure I've got way too many raptors. Dang hawk or owl in every tree.

We don't have any red foxes down here... just the grays.

I had two owls make a home for 5 months inside one of my hunting blinds. What a mess. The hawks migrate, but not the owls. I guess we're stuck with them.
Still can't figure out the red fox situation.

Going hunting in the morning-

Shooed one ringtail out of a box blind about 2 1/2 years ago on a ranch near Mountain Home/Real County. The box was unusable though due to the mess that critter made, but it was kinda a pretty little thing.
Seen many foxes out there as well, but have noticed that if there are lots of coyotes then foxes get eaten. I even saw a porcupine out there some 4 years ago; first one I'd ever seen roaming wild. About the same time some 250 miles Northwest we spotted a badger on our deer lease in Meridian/Bosque county. First time i'd ever eyeballed one of those varmints too.

Ringtails are quite fond of Agarita berries, and just like in hogs, most of the fruit goes right through them, well, like a goose. I think they bear fruit in the spring and fall, but don't take that as gospel. Most folks clear them out first if they are working the land, as they have leaves with thorny spikes on the end which will seek the most vunerable spot on a man and poke through the toughest leather, but the plant feeds a lot of critters including deer.

Interesting,
There are some good deer in Bosque county. Also about the prettiest county in Texas.
We are in JAck County, not to far from you.
