With the recent thread on the obsolescence of the revolver this book makes interesting reading. Seven will love it!
The latest offering from the NRA's Firearms Classic Library is: The modern Pistol by Walter Winans. This book was printed in 1919. In addition to being a world class pistol shot Walter Winans was an outspoken character of a type seldom seen today.
Written in a different time this book is filled with interesting thoughts. Some fun quotes:
Page I: "Moreover, the revolver is now obsolete, and there is no use learning to shoot it."
Page iv: " My object in writing this book is to give instruction in the modern substitute for the revolver. That is to say, the automatic pistol,…
Page 1: "There is no use learning revolver shooting. That form of pistol is obsolete except in the few instances where it survives for target shooting, or is carried for self-defense….
Winans had plenty to say about games such as golf, and vices such as smoking.
Page 4: "Smoking is one of the greatest enemies to good shooting, even more so than alcohol."
Winans had plenty to say about the safe use of firearms.
Page 9: "The constant paragraph in the papers announcing a "did not know it was loaded" accident bear testimony to how ignorant the public are of even the elementary knowledge (I will not say common sense), not to point a firearm at another in play."
Page 10: A man does not put a razor to the throat of another in play, but he thinks it "humor" to take up a firearm, point it at another and pull the trigger."
This interesting book is well worth its purchase price.
