I just saw a 45 colt stainless Model 92 built by Hartford (EMF)
My question is, how hot of a load can it handle? I shoot a Ruger, and do not want to have a problem with hot loads going in the wrong firearm.
I was feeling real comfy behind that action; it is a lot smoother than my Winchester model 94
Thanks all...

Scout,
The 92 copies are definatly strong enough to take Ruger level loads. The biggest problem you might have is getting them to feed the heavier bullets that have a longer OAL.
I had to have mine worked over so it would feed the longer Keith bullets.
Paco Kelly over at Leverguns.com says it's a stronger action than either the Win 94 or the Marlin 1894. I can't verify this, I don't load mine that hot.
But I have no wories about feeding my Rossi the same ammo as my Ruger BH.

Suffice to say, Rossi's chambering it in .454 Casull. I think you'll be just fine with warm Colts.

Bonjour VictorLouis and all of you,
I already have a Rossi 92 in .44 mag. The French importer of Rossi's lists only the .45 Long Colt chambering, not the .454 Casull. I have never seen one in France. Are the .454's that I heard about several times really factory made or are they customized rifles ?
Thank you for your answer.

MikeG,
thank you for the info. Lots of interesting things to learn. Since the .454 is not yet available here, can you tell me what is the average retail price in the U.S.A.?

Don't know about average retail, but a quick search of www.gunsamerica.com (online gun listing / auction) found this one new for $500 U.S.:

So that's probably a good starting point over here. Likely they'd be a bit more at a stocking dealer.
Looks like the .45 Colts are a bit less and much more available.
Hope this helps.

The street price is around $325 for the 20" blue finish. Stainless around $60 more. 16" barrel adds about $100 to the price.

So, can I rechamber a standard 45colt rifle to a 454 casull?
Or is there a heat treat difference between the Puma 454, and the Hartford 45 colt?

Oh no.... not unless you want to be wearing it.
SAAMI spec for .45 Colt is about 14,000 - 16,000CUP, somewhere in that range, and I think around 50,000CUP or better for the Casull.
Yes - a lot of .45 Colt guns will take more pressures, there's plenty of Rugers and Marlins and TCs and such being loaded to 30,000CUP or so. But that's still a LONG way from the Casull.
Not sure how Rossi keeps the .454 92s together, different materials, design, or what.... but it's an impressive feat.

What about in the stainless configurations?

Stainless isn't necessarily any stronger than blued steel. Too many grades of materials, and too many ways to make it into a gun. Dangerous to generalize about materials; save for the obvious conclusion that stuff made today is generally a heck of a lot better than the guns (and cruise ships!) of a hundred years ago.
