I am looking at a ruger 10/22, how well built are these guns? I'v heard that they jam alot, is this true? what do you think is the best .22 semi-automatic avalible at a resonable price?

Built like a tank, typical Ruger. I don't think mine has ever jammed with .22 LR ammo, any brand. Like all semi-auto .22s, they need to be cleaned out once in a while, shoot it and see.

Like MikeG says: built like a tank. I have 3 of 'em and they've never jammed except when I tried a couple of cheapo, aftermarket magazines in them. Stay with Ruger mags, flush the action out once a year and lightly relube it, and chances are you'll never experience a jam.

Have shoot about 40000 rounds and it`s still going. If you clean it after 1000 rounds you will not have any problems.

Like "gunwriter" say buy orginal ruger parts and you have no problems.

If it jams (stovepipe) it's most likely the need to take apart the factory magazine for cleaning and reinstall with a few more "flats" of preload on the spring. Go to rimfirecentral.com for further instructions on this procedure if needed...but it's really easy.

Most jamming is from mag prob's.

I've shot the 10/22 a few times in .22lr. It's a nice little rifle, like every one's saying it is built like a tank. Out of the few times I've fired it, it jammed on me a couple times. But, the rifle was not maintained well at all, and the spring was weak in the magazine (didn't realize that till after i shot it ). 10/22's are cheap and very accurate. Also they are decent looking. If you get the 10/22's with open sights, you will like the rear sight. I dont know why, but I have a particular liking for Ruger's folding rear sights. The wood they use on the gun is not cheap either. I don't know how they do it, but Ruger can make a great rimfire for a low cost. There is only one reason why I didn't get one, and that is because everyone has it. I like to get things that aren't really popular, or used by everyone. I guess it makes me feel unique.

I love my little 10-22. When I got it for christmas a year ago it was much adored. Soon after the groups were becoming intolerable and had to get a target barrel and hogue om stock. Also installed a nice 3-9 scope with adjustable AO and fingertip turrets (nice for the blooping trajectory).

Now, as most will tell you these things set up like this (on the cheap) will shoot the lights out. I didnt work the trigger yet. Here's some of the better groups at 50yds, .18, .21 and several---almost regularly will shoot .30's. Find what ammo of the cheap class will shoot and cycle good for the rifle. After this little secret I grabbed my dial caliper and began to measure for length. I save and set aside all the .80 length (give or take .001) and these are the babies that will shoot cloverleaf groups at .50.

Lots of dead squirrels.
