Has anybody shot a snake with a .22 CCI shot shell?

I let non-bothersome snakes alone, but last year did shoot a 5' long rattler that insisted on staying under my car door. I didn't feel much like walking up and opening the door while he was right there and buzzing. That was with 44 shotshell and it was very effective. Now I'm looking to buy a lightweight 22 (seen another post) and wonder how effective the .22 shotshells are on sizeable snakes? There's only size 12 shot in .22s compared with #9 in 44s.

Would whoever has control over moving posts transfer this one to Rimfire Ammunition post section?
Thanks,
Dave

Shot a bunch of them with .22shot shells...are times of year when that's the only legal centerfire to have with you duing a hunt in Louisiana (BP season amoung others). We got snakes.

Big ones will usually ball up and loose intterest in you, but not die....two or three other rounds while they are squirming about usually does the trick. Thruthfully, I'm usually shooting a revolver DA and just roll out a double or tripple tap and that does the job.

Range is limited...patterns run out at about 15 feet, which is OK as #12 shot isn't going to penetrate very well at anything but short range.

Simple test is a tin can. The plastic nosed CCI's give the least penetration, but the best patterns...they often won't go though both sides of an Al. soft drink can. The crimped shot shells (Winchester still make them, perhaps Federal as well) will pentrte a better (both sides of the can) but pattern a little broader. Take your pick.
