View Full Version : Hog hunting

At work, a guy was complaining to my brother about the hog problem near the refugee where we plan to deer hunt this year. It seems that the hogs are coming into yards of houses next to the refugee. A couple times, dogs have tried to run the hogs off, only to have the hogs turn on the dogs. The guy said some people are worried about letting their kids play in the yard. If the hogs will attack dogs, they might attack children. Coyote season starts September 1 and we can legally carry 30 caliber rifles on the refugee to coyote hunt. Hogs are considered nuisance animals and can be shot during coyote season. My brother and I feel that it is our civic duty to help with the hog problem. Local people have been very nice to give us directions and location of the problem hogs. Maybe, if we work it right, we can even get a free pie out of this.

the hogs around here are very scary. I have been in a car when we were hunting pigs when a huge boar went mad and charged the truck and punchured a tyre.

I have yet to hunt hogs, but from reading about it on this forum I'm about ready to make a trip south.

Michael,

Hogfest I was great and I expect Hogfest II to be even better. You told me those hogs will challenge us on their turf and that sounds exciting to me.

I will have to wait until Tuesday and look on my school calendar to see what week our Spring Break is in March. I will get back with you on this and thanks.

Dave :)

p.s. PM or e-mail me on the knee rehab. I still have a slight twinge at times but it feels soooo much better.

PM or e-mail me on the knee rehab. I still have a slight twinge at times but it feels soooo much better.

My therapist was MikeG as he and I pulled a hog across Hondo Creek in the middle of the night five days after surgery. I thought I would loose my leg the following week but after that my doctor wouldn't even see me when I told him what I did. Went back to work after three weeks. You see, hog hunting is the answer!

That was quite a night! Poor ole MikeG didn't know that he was destined to absorb most of the work!!! We gave up trying to move the pig up the creek, found a gravel bar (the creek is full of quicksand) gutted the hog in the flowing water, and then started moving along the bank to the crossing point. Quite a night, my knee was on fire, and several times I thought I might actually pass out!!!

Lots of motivation to get up that hill and back to the truck, let me tell you it gets REAL dark down in that creek bottom!

Glad I didn't have to pull Ranch Dog up the hill, as he'd probably object to me gutting him first, to save excess weight.....

Michael,

Here goes for HogFest 2:
March 14 - 18 is our Spring Break. That is Mon thru Fri. We would be able to travel either Friday night the 11th and/or Saturday the 12th. We would not like to stay any longer than Friday evening the 18th or leave Saturday a.m. the 19th.

At this time there are 4 of us verbally committed to be there. The 4 of us went on a hog hunt in June of last year to S.E. Oklahoma and had a blast even though I didn't see a hog. The 3 of them shot 5 one evening. I made up for it last March :D

Mattpair,

We are talking about S. Texas. Last march there were two fellas that drove into S.Texas to hunt hogs while we were there. I believe they were from Mississippi. They shot a couple of big hogs that first night they were there.

Matt,

You can drop her off in Dallas to shop at Neiman-Marcus and pick her up on the way back. Leave her the car and Jack and I will take you on from there and deliver you back in a couple of days. Just make sure she has lots of plastic. :D :D

Got the dates Dave... I will start putting together something based on the same lodging and dinning requirements last year. Having things setup leaves just that much more time to hunt.

Again, my only reservation about the hunt last year was too much vehicle time and the hogs where a little spooky.

We had a great time at the levergun only hunt last May, and there are several ranches including the Smith property that can handle more than a few hog hunters in relative comfort. Spread yourselves out and the hogs don't get shy of the feeders, but my two buddies said that the trip from Texarkana and Ft. Worth made for a day of travel begining and end of the hunt, so a three day hunt would mean five days of vacation days. I'm in San Antonio now so it's just an hour south of here for me, but I'd be glad to help you guys find the right place for the right price. PM me if you'd like some help.

PM me if you'd like some help.

We are all ears SFT. This year we hunted at a full accomidation hunting camp that worked out real nice. The hogs where a bit spooky but we really liked the facilities.

The hunt needs to take place the week noted above and we are looking for lodging and food included with the hunt. I'm going to check out some of the places in my neck of the woods and see what they would have. If you want to look around there, let us know what you find.

I really like the idea of a Leveraction hunt, I know Jack and VTDW would fit the part but I don't know who else is interested.

The levergun only hunt was fun, but there's no reason to make this one the same. Also, when my two buddies and I went this last May, we brought our own food as finding a ranch with a package hunt was too expensive with that option (for us anyway). I will post the results of what options there are both with lodging/meals & without.
Most of the places I have either been to our am familiar with are south(west) of San Antonio. I do know of one very nice place in the western edge of the hill country, about 38 miles due south of Junction, but that might be farther out than everyone wants to go, plus I don't know if they ever got up to offering room and board. Any ideas as to which area of Texas ya'll would like? I threw in the "ya'll" for our yankee friends who might be coming. Everyone north of Dallas..........;)

I'd like more info too. Unlike Mattpair, my fiancee would love to go also. Not sure when we both could get off right now though (I'm a student, she's a teacher). We also need to watch our finances a bit because we're saving up for a wedding :(

Oh and how far is S.TX from Lubbock :)

`Found another place, 2 hours south of San Antonio towards Cotulla: 6 days/7 nights, all inclusive, semi-guided. No night hunting, semi-guided, meals included. Facilities have walk in freezer and ice maker, ranch is large (8 cabins around the entire place, fishing included, hunts are over food plots and open fields in morning and in blinds near feeders in afternoons to cut down on pressure. Shoot as many hogs as you like, no kill/trophy fee, coyotes are free no limit and shoot EVERY porcupine you see. $1500 per person, 1/3 reservation fee, credit cards accepted. My friend is working on a deal with the owners to see if we can get a discount and package rate, so let me know how many folks will be attending so I can see if it'll be enough to get a discount.

I've found several less expensive places, with both hogs and exotics, and I know more than a few hunters who'd like to go before next March, so don't give up just yet. What dates work for you?
