Hi,
Have a .22 Win Mag bolt action which I use for kangaroo and rabbit shooting. My fellow shooters use a 22 Hornet and even the 243 Winchester so I really have to be able to hit the kangaroos especially hard to match them. I looked on the remington and winchester sites but i'm confused at the weights of the rounds. A 33grain remington seems to hit harder than the 40 or 45grain winchester. Yet I thought that a 45grain would have more propellant.
Do the rimfire cartriges come packed full of propellant and therefore I cant buy stronger hitting ones? I really need suggestions on which rounds to get. Remingtons and winchesters are pretty much the only available rounds in my area.

The 30, 33, 34, and 40gr.loadings are all full power...that's all the power you can safely have. haven't looked recently, but Federal use to load a 50gr. jacketed bullet that was full charge as well.
The only reduced .22mag. ammo is the Winchester Dynopoint 45gr.
"Hit harder" is kind of difficult to qualify. The ligher bullets are moving faster, sot hey tend to drop less at normal ranges and to expand a bit more, but they seldom pennetrate as well as the 40gr. bullets. They make a nicer "splat" but aren't as likely to do in as deep.
As for powder, given the same case, the heavier the bullet the lighter the charge weights in order to maintain the same pressure. Just can't put as much powder behind a 40gr. bullet as the lighter ones without going over the max. pressure rating.

Thanks
Got a box of Winchester Super-X 40grain Jacketed Hollow Points on their way. I really need a bit of penetration power for the big roos as I'm behind the eight ball in the hitting power side of things- especially against 243's
Just working out the ballistics and sighting etc. when I'm on the ute at night we dont get long to sight up different target distances and we rarely shoot at 70 metres or more. The round zeros at 90 metres so will adjust it to shoot down a whisker and that should be fine. When I go stalking them on foot i will sight in and learn the scope settings for closer and longer targets.
Cheers

Don't shoot the size game you do with the .22mag., but have settled on the 40gr. as the "all arround" weight. The light weight 30's are great at small critters you want ot vaporize.
Haven't had a lot of luck with the heavy 50gr. Federals...accuracy was good, but didn't seem to do much at 70-100 yards but poke a hole though things (with an occasional one that tumbled internally and killed like the hammer of Thor)...results weren't all that predictable, so I dropped them from the line up.

Yeah kangaroos are pretty big for a magnum but hey its all fun in the end. I was thinking of getting a box of the 33grain hornady V-max rounds for rabbits. I also heard they are pretty firery on them small animals- "Explosive" even. I'm not able to get the 50 grains in Western Australia so that rules trying them out. Getting too slow anyway.
Sorted out the ballistics last night and worked out the bullet (under zero wind etc ) only deviates 2.6 inches out to the 91 metres or 100 yards. When I get the chance to sight it up- when the wind stops blowing- I will try to get it set up for head shots. If I can get it around an inch out of where the target is- I know it will knock them down and if I think its inapropriate I can then count on the chest shot.

The fastest bullet i've try it's the CCI MAXI MAG +V 30 gr. i don't know for the "hard hitting" but with the speed of that bullet(2200) i think it could be good.

I see that CCI have a new ammo in 22 mag.(The Maxi Mag TNT)
See the spec. at :http://www.cci-ammunition.com/default.asp?menu=1&s1=3&s2=5
Can you get the Winchester Supreme .22Mag 34gr in your area? I have great luck with this load on coyotes.

For me too it's the best ammo i've ever shoot with my Marlin; 1-1.5@100 and good damage on game.

I shot almost everything available when I got my Ruger 10/22 mag. The standard CCI maxi-mags shot well, but the maxi-mag +V and +P I couldn't get to shoot under 4" at 50 yards. The Remington Supreme were accurate, but were inconsistant and would either stovepipe or just not fire at all. The Federal Premiums with Sierra 30 gr HP shot excellant and rearly had problems with the cycling, however Federal has since changed from Sierra to Speer and I have not tried these at this time. I recently shot some of the Winchester Supreme 34 gr loads and so far seem to be accurate and no trouble cycling. I also shot some of the new Federal 50 gr HP loads, they too were accurate and wil be trying them on coyotes this weekend. These loads only shoot about an inch lower than the faster 30 gr Federal loads and the 34 gr Winchester loads, but I believe the 50 gr bullets will have a more thorough effect on coyotes. We'll see.
