View Full Version : What do you think about these sites
I am thinking about putting on a Lyman 66LA reciever site and a Lyman 17AHB front site for hunting out to 150 yards, with a 1894C Marlin rifle. What do you think about this combination?
I what accuracy for the longer shots, but I am a little concerned about fast moving close in shots in the brush with the 17AHB front site. Would you recommend something different?

I sure do like the idea of the 66LA on your 1894C, a great sight for this application. However, I'd really reconsider the 17AHB for the front sight if this is to be a hunting rifle. Instead, I think I'd opt for the Ashley Outdoors front sight in this application. These front sights are extremely quick to pick up in the field, give a definitive sighting point, are rugged, and well suited to your application. I have several rifles wearing the Ashley front sights, and they actually add about fifteen minutes of sight acquisition time at dusk and dawn when using irons. I like them.
FWIW.
God Bless,

Thanks Marshall, I knew I could count on a good answer from you. Which Ashley sight do you like? BTW what do you think about the ghost ring site that ashley sells in comparision to the lyman?

I really like the Ashley ghost ring sight, however, on the Marlin rifles, my objection to them is that they sit up too high, and you have to "reach" up off the comb of the stock with your cheek for proper eye alignment. Whereas the Lyman 66LA and the Williams 94/336 sights sit low to the axis of the bore, and as such align with your eye quite naturally and comfortably when your cheek is resting upon the comb of the rifle. In snap shooting situations you'll find the Lyman sight you're anticipating installing is WAY quicker than the Ashley.
My advice is to go ahead and use the supplied sight insert to sight in your rifle, and when doing load workups, but then prior to taking the gun afield hunting, remove the insert and put it away (I've got a little box with over three dozen of them in it!), you'll never want or need it again! In effect you've just converted your sight to a ghost ring, and it'll be so fast in the field you'll wonder how you ever shot with anything else on that little carbine!
I don't remember the number of the Ashley sight, but it's the simple flat blade sight with a vertical white line... super effective and fast to aquire!

GM42,
I have to agree with Mr. Stanton on the Ashley Outdoors front sight it is very fast and bright in dim light.
He is also not steering you wrong on the reciever sights Lyman or Williams.
I use the Ashely Gost Ring. I have stubby fat hands and when I carry a rifle in the field I hold it around the reciever. The side mount of the reciever sights effects with my grip.
On the high sight picture of the Ashley Gost Ring I have not found this to be a prolbem (I also have a fat head and that could determin my sight picture ;)). The rear sight can be effected by the front sight. Ashely will exchange your front sight with one of a different size post. My sight set was shipped with a plastic tempoary front post that can be trimmed with a set of side cutters. This will set your front post hight within a general rear sight elavation.
A very small amount of front sight change can make a big differance on the rear sight hight. Brownells has a chart that will help in setting a front sight elevation. In my #55 Catalog it is on the bottom of page 266.
If every one was the same we would not have any thing to talk about.
Good Luck,

I'll add to the recommendations for the Ashley. They are now sold under the name XS Sight Systems, I believe, and Brownell's has any number of different heights and widths.
They even work well with an open rear sight; put one on an old mauser and it's shooting great.
Figure out what size you need (just compare to the existing front sight, assuming you've used it enough to be sure it's correct), and order as needed.
I have several Williams and one Redfield peep and once you are shooting, don't really notice any big difference between them.
Where is the best place to buy both the Lyman reciever sight and the Ashley front sight?
Thanks,
Geoff

Brownells has them both.
