is hard to beat. Really good deals on nice variables right now. i suggest set a price you can spend and find one in that range, a nice high quality 3-9x40 works great. Fixed powers run a bit less but the variables are getting cheaper and better al the time.

I just went through the same ordeal with my BLR in .308. My shooting conditions were somewhat the same. Sometime I will be in the woods with less than 100yd shots, and sometimes in a green field with a 200-300yd shot. I originally choose a Bushnell Elite 3200 3x9x40 with the Firefly reticle and rainguard coating. I really liked that scope a lot. That firefly reticle is a great idea and was really bright. But within the first 100 rounds the scope failed and started to shift POI. I sent it back to Bushnell and they are in the process of sending me a check for my total purchase tax and all. Really good customer service. I ended up buying a Luepold VX III 2.5x8x36 from Premier reticles and had them install a Heavy Duplex reticle. I like this scope a lot. Its a little lighter and has better optics. I'm going to the range this afternoon to sight it in. I will let you know how it does. I would recomend this scope for your BLR or maybee the VX III 1.5x6 with the heavy duplex. Whats your price range for the scope?

I shot a BLR in .308 for 22 years and used two scopes, a Redfield Tracker in 4x and a Leupold 6x. I am one of the few who prefers a fixed power scope on a .308. I have had too many situations where a long-range shot had my variable set at 3x or, even more so, a very close shot set at 9x. Maybe I am simply more forgetful than most.

Nope...not forgetfull...just rational.

If you aren't trying for dual use (varmints and deer) then a fixed power is just fine. There is nothing wrong with looking through a scope and getting the same magnification each time.

Harder to find good fixed powers, but I have to admit that some of the variables haven't been varied in so long, not sure the ring still moves.

The Leupold 6X would be a good choice also. I choose a varible since the gun would see equal deep woods and open fields time. If 90% of you shot are going to be between 100yds and 300yds A good fixed scope isn't a bad idea. My vote would go to the leupold 6X x 42mm if you have the money get the new 04 model that has all the new coatings (MC4 is what I think they call it), but I think Burris offers a few fixed power scopes as well. Never had any problems out of Burris scopes.

Just an exapmple. Have an old beat to dirt Savage 340 30-30. Have used it as a loaner rifle. The only loose scope I had at hand that would fit the odd mount of that Savage was a 3-9X.

That rifle ran up a fine total of failures, but nearly every time I checked on the shooter,I'd find that scope cranked all the way up to 9X. They'd miss shots at deer jumping up at there feet...miss shots at deer at ranges well beyond the 30-30's prime.

I just got PO'ed, crazy glued the scope at 3X and painted over the power numbers. Now at 3X, the temptation to shoot at 400yard deer is decreased and if one jumps up at your feet, you have a fighting chance of finding it in the field of view before it finds deep cover.

Think I cold live with a straight 4X or 6X (becasue no one makes a 5X) on that .308.

My favorite scope for .308 is 2X - 7X variable. Simmons 44 MAG is a good one but getting hard to find, discont'd in 2002. Thompson Center also makes a good scope for under $150.

I have two BLRs one in 308 and one 358 both have 1.5-4.5X20 variables. I find I never go below 2.5 even in thick cover. I like the fact that the scope sits really low and is a breeze to shoot. I think the perfect all round scope would be a 2-7 variable. And stick with a decent scope too. I have never been impressed with the lower end tascos or Nikko Stirlings. I have a Weaver and a Hakko on my BLRs.

I bought a BLR in the .358 several weeks ago and put a Leupold VX-I 2-7x on it. I was looking hard at the VX-III 2.5-8x but the reason I went with the VX-I was I wanted something lower power, a glossy finish to match the BLR and not spend a whole heck of a lot. I spent $179 for the VX-1 vs around 380-400 for the VX-III. And it's still a great scope and suits my needs fine. I also looked at fixed powers and those may not be a bad idea either.

leupold in 1.5 to 5 or 2 to 7 works well with the .308 rifles i have used. how do you like the BLR? seems like that rifle and that caliber would be a pretty good match...

I really like mine. It just seems a lot lighter than any other deer rifle I have had. It goes to my shoulder and points like a good shotgun, something very important for thick cover shooting where you might have to make a quick shot on a deer. Mine was very quick to foul, but a breakin procedure has helped this a little, I think the more I shoot it, the less it will foul. It probably could use a good lapping job, but I don't reload. Now that I have a functioning scope on it, I'm getting accecptable groups out of it, considering its a very light barreled levergun, about 1.25-1.5 inches at 100yds for a 4 shot group. Its pretty picky about what it shoots well, mine likes the federal premium load and the hornady light mag load the best.

I really like it, I was surprised at how well it shot and how mild the recoil is. To me it feels less than my .270 Win even though it's lighter. I look forward to taking it on a hunt in a few weeks in some swampland.

Matt,
Which Federal Premium load and Hornady Lite Mag load does the .308 BLR like? 150 or 165 grain? Nosler Partition, Solid Base or Ballistic Tip? Hornady spire Point?

I bought Mattpair's [actually traded for] BLR .308.
I hunted it with the factory open sights, which were not bad at all, but changed those to a set of Williams Firesights, which are excellent in low dawn/late afternoon light.
I originally had a 6x Redfield Widefield on top, but just got a great deal on a Burris 1.75x5, so that's what's there now.
It gives me a great field of view for close up at the low power, and when dealing in "minute-of-bambi", will allow 4" groups at 200 yards with my handloads.

As far as ammo is concerned, I have been rolling my own, using Marshall's 160gr. flatnose GC, over IMR4064. It is a thumper, and very accurate out to 200yards. The doe I hit last fall with it was at about 95 yards, the shot went clear thru, breaking the far shoulder on the way out, and she dropped about 6 steps later. The exit wound was the size of a golf ball!

The BLR is a fine rifle, sturdy and rugged, only wish I could afford one in every caliber:D

Matt must have had at least two BLR's in .308 because I also traded with him for one. I got it so I could practice with cheap .308 surplus ammo and hunt with my .358 BLR.

I hunt with the .358 BLR because of all the customized work that has been done to it; matte teflon metal finish (I don't like a shinny gun in the woods either), matte black synthetic stock and forarm, muzzle brake, trigger job and lighter springs. It recoils like a 30-30 and the "Quiet Brake" brand muzzle brake isn't too hard on the ears.

I've got a 1-3x on mine (hey, it was a huge change from peeps!) but now yearn for my boy's new Leupold 2-7x. Under $200, fairly compact and lightweight. In detachable mounts of course.

I shot one with a redfield 2-7 widefield scope that was a pretty nice combo

A Leupold 4X has ridden on my .308 BLR for 35 years, have made shots edging toward 300 yards and have never wanted more power. Always ready, no mumble, no fumble.
