View Full Version : Shortening the barrel of a Rossi 92?

I have a 20" .357 mag Rossi SRC distributed by Interarms.

How would this rifle perform if the barrel was cut down to 16"? Right now its very accurate but a little too long for southeastern forests and brush. Are there any negative consequences when a barrel is cut down? Anyone have any experience with a project like this?

What would a good estimate be for the cost of such a modification?

Thanks,

Patrick

This seems like a worthwhile modification to me. As a pistol round, there'll likely be minimal velocity loss, probably about 100fps. There's a little more work involved than a typical cut & crown. The mag tube will have to be shortened an equal amount, which will reduce capacity a couple of rounds. I'd consider cutting it from the receiver end. The barrel band will have to be moved back. I don't think there is any barrel taper, so it should just slide back. Your front sight should mount atop your barrel band, so no need to have a new dovetail cut in your barrel. I would guess this is a $100 job.
