Which seem to be the powders producing the highest velocities with these lighter bullets? Load swap shows RE-7. My books like 4895 and 2400 and 4198. Comments?

Everything I've read has suggested that RE-7 is the powder for the lighter weight bullets, outside plinking loads. I'm using 52 grains of RE-7 with a 350 grain slug.
I've not tried any other powders since this one worked so well and I've got bunches of it.

IMR 4198 at 48.5 grains gives almost 2100 fps, not a max load. My Hornady manual shows 4198 gives higher velocity than RE-7. Unfortunantly hornandy's 300 grain bullets are designed for less than 2000 fps so they don't list Ruger No 1 loads. I'd like to work up an obnoxious 300 grain load for pumkin exploding and varmit shooting. How high can one go in a No. 1 with RE-7 or 4198?

The Lyman #47 manual shows 63 gr Reloader #7 with a 300 gr bullet as a max. I use 60gr with a 300gr Rem for groundhogs out of a #3Ruger. It's capable of groups less the .5 with this loading. Never tried anymore powder when this one works so nice.

With the Standard disclaimer- these are safe in mine, don't know about yours:
Browning 1885; Sierra 300 gr HP- 2.625 OAL:
57.5 gr. IMR-3031=1890 fps, 16.0 SD.
55 gr. H-4198 = 2050 fps, 18.9 SD.
48 gr 4198 gives same velocity as 3031 load but SD goes to *&^&$#^.
This shoots pretty good out to 400 yds.

Charlie with what bullet are you only getting 2050 fps with 55 grains of 4198? Must be a 350 or heavier bullet. I was refereing to the 300 grain HP

THE 2 BEST 45/70 POWDERS ARE RE 7 AND H 322. H322 FOR 400 GR AND UP, RE 7 HAS THE EDGE WITH LIGHT 300 GR. BULLETS, TOSS A COIN FOR 350 GRAINERS.

My favorite powder for the 300 grain 45/70 loads is reloader #7.I use 52 grains in the marlin 1895's and 60 grains in a Ruger#1.I have went as high as 63 grains in the Ruger, but the best accuracy was using a charge between 59 and 60.5 grains.
