22 rifles seem to multiply in my safe. Seems whenever I see an old 22 in a shop, I just cannot hesitate to buy one.
They are fun inexpensive plinkers, I do not believe I have one that I paid more than 150 dollars. Among the list are:
A JC higgins semi, with a retractable sling in the stock. The stock on this rifle covers the receiver, and is truly handsome.
A Winnie 9422 XTR that a friend gave to me when he moved away.
A JC Higgins single shot. I always spoke of these type of rifles as "chipmonk guns"
And my favorite, a Winchester 1906, manufactured in 1916, that I have lovingly rebuilt.
The rifle came into my posession, believe it or not, found in the wall on my home while adding an addition to my home. Short of all it's parts and stripped almost to white metal, I searched at gun shows for several years looking for original replacements. I was not able to find to find a factory rear sight, nor the slide retention plate, so thru Gunpartscorp. I purchased a rear repro sight. My gunsmith was able to fabricate a slide plate for me. I took my time and refinished the wood as good as it would, and then sent the entire gun to Checkmate in Florida, for their master reblue.
After some time I received it back from it's reblue, and reassembled it.
It does me good to see an old and all but forgotten gun get restored.
It shoots well, is slick as owl poop, and handles like it was designed!
I have been teaching my 10 year old to shoot on it, and it will be her's to cherish in the coming years, hopefully to leave to her children.
I thought you might like to see it.

Thank you for looking.
As this thread get rolling, I'll post pics of the others.
So what is your favorite 22 rifle, and why?

I prefer the older classic .22 rifles and managed to find a few. My favorite is a Springfield Model 84C from the 1940s that is identical to the rifle I first used while growing up. I found a Stevens Model 4 that is a mirror image. My second choice would be a Winchester Model 69. All the best...
Gil
I was raised on a Marlin Model 39 and dearly loved that rifle. Bought a new one in 1975 and it's still a love affair. Just gave it to one of my son's to use in instructing his six year old daughter so I'll have to start looking again. Certainly the 39 will be the first one, but have always been interested in 'fixing up' a Ruger 10/22 with some of the many components available.
By the way, beautiful rifle......

Thanks DOK...
and she shoots well also!
The Marlin 39:o...another I am looking for, but wish to get an old one, rather than on of the newer ones. Those that have them tend to keep them, those that seel tend to want Mucho donero's for theirs. in time, I will find one.
Gil;
I know the rifle you speak of, A fine one indeed!
Here is the semi JC higgins I spoke of.

Used to be the Ruger 10-22. As my grandbabies got to the point of starting to shoot I got a 452 CZ Lux and a couple of CZ trainers. Very accurate and not a lot of money. Traded off all of my 10-22's, just not the guns for nine thru 12 year olds to start shooting with. Perhaps in a few years though.
I tore down my mothers house back in the Late 80's and found a Winchester pump wrapped in oiled rags in the wall. It was the one without the hammer. Don't know how old it was, but the fella next door traded me a real nice GMC pickup for it. Don't know if I made a good deal as he was still giggline about it the next day. It was mint, (the winchester not the pickup)

Why am I getting this uncontrollable urge to start punching holes in my walls?

I, too love .22 rimfire rifles. I have a few that are a joy to shoot and carry in the woods. An old Marlin 39, a Remington 511 and 41 bolt actions and a Model 141 pump gun all have made lots of meat and given me many hours of pleasure.

Why am I getting this uncontrollable urge to start punching holes in my walls?
That is a true story.
My house was a cape-cod style house, that once we started a family, quickly outgrew. The second floor was just one big unheated room.
So we took the entire second story off the house, and put a new one on. Three bedrooms and a bath, with a large common hallway.
I did the demo of the upstairs myself, to save $$$.
The previous owner, who died, had sunk to chippendale dressers into the upstairs walls. We found out that the dressers were over 100 years old, and deceided to save them. While I was carefully removing one of the dressers, tucked behind itin a heavy plastic bag, wrapped in cheese cloth was this rifle.
So in as much as I was able to save this beautiful little 22, I also took my time and refinished the chippendale dressers. Home run!

That is some BEAUTIFUL work on both the rifles and the dresser! You have a real talent for restoration! I should be so lucky as to find such treasures in my house. If I punch out my walls, I may find a cased presentation Patterson Colt with all accessories. But then, I may not. . . :(

While in high school and college I hung out a lot at a gunsmith's shop. Actually he was a local police officer and 'smith on the side. Truth is he wasn't a very good 'smith but he tolerated my teenage ignorance and was a good friend at a critical time in my life.
So, sometime in the 1960's I bought a used .22 rifle from him, a Remington 513S. The 513T was the entry-level target rifle back then. The 513S had a sporter stock rather than the bulkier, target style. It has a 26" bbl., decent trigger, and 5 shot detachable magazine.
I don't know the exact weight but it is a full-sized, full-weight rifle that closely approximates the heft and handling of my three Model 700 centerfires. With a 1", 4X Sightron scope in Weaver mounts, it provides excellent tune up for shooting the '06 and the 35 Whelen.
When I lived in Missouri and regularly hunted squirrels...well, it was almost unethical because the squirrels didn't have a chance.
This is the only .22 rifle I own today. Gone are the Ruger 10-22, the Win. 9422, etc. The Rem. 513S is all I will ever need in this lifetime.
When I was in like 7th or 8th grade I traded in my bolt action daisy legacy 22 for a used model 60 marlin.
I promptly found out it wouldnt hit anything. terrible groups. I decided to give it a good cleaning and when I removed the stock I found what looked like a large chunk of wood putty against the tubular mag. The previous owner had also installed sling swivel studs. the front one did not have enough filed off and it hit the magazine pretty severely also. I fixed these little things. sanded out the channel in the stock so it was floated clear back to the action. This made this gun an instant tack driver. It is nothing with the small tube 2-7 tasco scope to shoot the center out of the bullseye at 50 yards. As fast as I can pull the trigger. I have killed more critters with this gun than any other.
For that reason it is my favorite.
Last fall i purchased a scuffed up sort of rusty model 780 marlin just for the checkered walnut stock to put on my old mans pristine model 25.
I made the mistake of shooting it before tearing it apart. It is also an amazing tack driver. So i still need a stock for dads gun.

Of all the Working rifles I have used over the years as a Pro shooter I would have to say the .22lr holds a special place for me . I started with a single shot Lithgow ,then a fn brownnig semi auto then the same but in pump! Then I became a Pro Rabbit Shooter and only a Bruno Mod2 would suffice, but i ended up with a Fieldman l/h repeater that has been with me through thick & thin for over 25yrs.
These days I have in the safe .22 rem Boys rifle 1906,rem pump mod 12?,savage single shot ? fieldman bolt & I really want another Lithgow

A Remington Model 37-1940 followed closely by a Winchester Model 52B. Both are amazingly accurate (I shoot at 50 and 100yds with open sights. Blows the bulls-eye out of the target from a rest.

Hermit, would you care to let us in on what kind of ammo your match .22 rifles prefer? How does the non-match stuff perform in the same rifles?
Have two of them - a Kimber 82C with a fluted ss bbl and a 1937 mfg'd Marlin 39.
Then, there's a Ruger 10/22 factory heavy bbl w/ laminated stock, a Winchester Mod 190 semi-auto, a Romanian Mod 69 training rifle and a cute little Chipmunk single shot that belongs to the grandson.

I got three of them, and they all shoot great. On one of them I installed a Lyman 17A front sight and a Anschitz rear sight. Another has a scope. Last one is factory stock.

I bought a Mossberg Palomino .22 in the '60's and loved that little gun. It was carried on a Bulldozer to shoot snakes with. Unfortunately, a limb fell on it and broke it in half in half(literaly). It broke the metal just behind the trigger. Anybody know where I might find another one? Thanks.

I'd have to say any of my BSA Martini Model 15's. Cut one down to a 18" barrel and reduced it's diameter, and lightened the butstock. Makes a dandy small game rifle.

Sorry it took so long to reply.
I shoot standard velocity CCI - this will sound very strange to some here, but I haven't found better performing ammo for these two guns than this, and I've tested extensively.
I'm in the lucky position of having two guns that perform best with pretty cheap ammo.

That's amazing! I was about to order some match ammo to test in a Winchester 52 that I got from CMP but hadn't fired yet. I'm hoping that the domestic match will work well and I don't have to buy that expensive imported ammo. I would be really happy to get good groups from standard velocity CCI. Thanks for your input.

I have just two .22lr's......a modded 10/22 and a '74 Nylon66. The ruger is the most fun to shoot but for carrying I'll prefer the Nylon66 by the end of the hunt.
