Decided on the marlin 336 SS
Marlin is smoother, more reliable and is simpler to clean and dissasemble.
It's a classic cartridge, I can hunt anything in the South Eastern US and I'm able to afford zeroing in and about 100 rounds a weekend of practice.

I am now looking at scopes, I read on CHuck Hawke's website that the most classic scope and one that would do just fine is a 4X scope... I don't need an adjustable scope (3-9 etc)

He also mentions it's not wise to use a see through scope mount... like the one many of you use, He says it hurts\(I can't remember the phrase,) and effects the accuracty.
I would like to know if any of you concur, I would still like to have the ability to use a view under scope mount.

I would like to know if any of you recommend any 4x scopes, I looked on cabelas and Cheaperthandirt.com and found several, ranging from 30 bucks to 289.
thanks guys, I'm so excited the rifle arrives in 10 days !!!

"See through" rings put your scope up so high that you may have problems keeping your face on the stock when looking through the scope.

If you think that scope failure in the field may be an issue, use quick-detach rings.

As MikeG said, go with a detachable mount, or with a Weaver pivot mount, if they make any for Marlins. I have got such a pivot mount from Weaver on my Winchester 88, and it gives the fastest choice of all mounts between irons and scope. It's not expensive and, best of all, reliable. In fact: it's handier and faster than the expensive claw mount on my Sauer drilling.

Rinaldo...

Nice choice of rifle and you are correct, it will be a sight easier to clean than that M94. I favor the low power variables and the Bushnell 1.5-4.5X32 (http://www.bushnell.com/products/riflescopes/specs/71-1545.cfm) in particular. I've got so many of these scopes, I don't know how many I have any more. The best price I've found for the scope is through D&R Sports Center (http://www.dnrsports.net/miva/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=DSC&Product_Code=BSN711545&Category_Code=scopesbsn).

I am almost 59 years old and have hunted with scoped rifles for at least 45 years. I have NEVER needed to take a scope off in the field. A very few times I have been aggravated by the attention required to keep snow or rain off my scope. But I have never lost a shot or been significantly handicapped by a scope "at the moment of truth."

I have used fixed power 4X and 2.5X almost exclusively in the Ozark timber and hollows of Missouri, and in the mountains and sagebrush prairies of Wyoming.

Ranch Dog has good advice. He has used those low-powered variables on Marlins enough to be a valid witness. I would add that in the South Eastern U. S. you would be perfectly served by a fixed power 2.5X. I have used a Weaver K2.5 for many years and have it mounted on a Rem. 700 in 35 Whelen as my elk rifle.

You'll love the Marlin. Good luck with whatever combo you choose.

You guys are great thanks !

SO I'm pretty accurate when I assume no one really hunts with iron sights?
I learned how to do so in the military, prob not how I'd like to have learned but those **** iron sights kept me alive. That's why I wasn't sure what to get...I've seen some where the peep through mounts were set up and they look great but I can see where they would hinder my ability to properly hold the rifle.
I've been deer hunting almost 50 times and I have never seen anyone take one with iron sights, thought it'd be a challenge like trying to catch a large tarpon on 8 pound test.

Iron sights on all my handguns, and I've hunted deer and hogs with iron sights on rifles many times.

A good peep (receiver) sight is a huge improvement over the usual rear sights. There's no reason you can't use open sights for hunting.....

Thanks, I ordered my marlin, I've decided to wait and shoot till I feel like I can't get any better shooting with the iron sights, then perhaps consider a scope. For the hunting I'll be doing I don't think I'll even need one for now. when I start going on hunting trips I'll def get one, but by then I'll be able to afford a leopold.

I'll post some photos as soon as I get the rifle guys

Rinaldo,

I went through the very same scope search almost a year ago and have been very happy with the decision I made. I got a 4X compact scope made by Millet. It is their Buck Silver line. I got it from Natchez Shooters Supply for under $70. I have been very impressed with the quality for the price. It is a couple times better quality than a Bushnell Sportview I paid the same price for. Plus, the short compact scope just looks good on the lever action.

Midway USA had the cheapest price on this scope but they were out of stock. Natchez had them in stock and agreed to meet Midway's price. Mighty white of them, I thought.

So, that's my recommendation. Millet 4X Buck Silver Compact for $70. I think you'll be happy with it.

Oh, the compact scope doesn't need the long scope rail either, so I cut some length off of the standard scope rail so none of it hangs over the front of the 336 receiver.

Here's a link to a picture of what the scope looks like on a 336.

Another couple scopes to consider would be the Leupold 1-4 x 20mm oe the Leupold rifleman or VX1 2-7, they are great scopes for the leverguns.

I do a lot of hunting with open sights. I use the Williams Receiver sights and love them. I have to second the comment about the lack of need to have back up iron sights with a scope. I hunt a lot and have never seen the point to it. If you destroy your rifle to the point the scope fails, the iron sights will likely be off also. Mount your scope as low on the gun as you can. You shouldnt have any problems.
