I've got a Marlin 336 30/30 from the mid 70's ... and it's got no designation other than this stamped on the bbl:

THE MARLIN FIREARMS CO. NORTH HAVEN, CONN., U.S.A.
EST.1870-MICRO-GROOVE BARREL-MOD.336 CAL.30-30WIN.

I have no clue if mine is a 336C, CS, E, whatever.... How can I find out? Do I have to call Marlin w/ the serial number?

Some more clues are that it's got no checkering on any of the wood ... Barrel is 19.5" long ... The tube magazine under the bbl is almost as long as the bbl itself ... hooded front sight w/ a rear ramp site on the bbl ... receiver is drilled/tapped for modern day scope mounts ... and the butt plate is hard plastic with a white line spacer.
I've attached this picture to help out too ...

Thanks for the help ...

It looks like a standard 336C to me. I believe the "CS" designation was applied with the introduction of the cross-bolt safety. That's my understanding, but I defer to the Marlin experts out there.

WGM,

Your Marlin is none of the above. During the late 70's and early 80's Marlin made some rifles that simply state 336 with no model designation. They are worth no more or less than those that carry some description of model. It is simply a Marlin 336.

WGM I had the same problem you did as I recently purchased 30/30 that looks identical to yours. Heres what I found out; Marlin produced a 30/30 with no letter designation during the mid 70s to the early 80s. Check out (www.oldguns.net ) and enter your serial number to find out when it was made. My rifle turned out to be made in 1982. If your first two numbers in your serial # are 18 then yours was also made in 1982. Check it out and good luck. Also Sidespin could also be right this is the info I found. Good Luck!

Thanks for the link kgs.
Found out the 336RC I have was made in 1950. I picked it up about 14 yrs ago intending it to be my son's 1st deer rifle...liked it so well kept it for myself. ;)

Ah...didn't see the 336rc thread. Mine too was drilled/tapped for a scope at some point in it's life.
