Anyone have experience with the Charles Daly "Zastava" factory 22 LR? There's one at the local gun shop here that has a nice piece of wood on it, but the machining looks a little rough. Just wondering whether I can expect decent shooting out of it. It's priced just under $200, so I guess I can't get hurt too bad, but if it shoots 6" groups at 100 yds, I wouldn't like it too much! Any input would be appreciated. Thx.

Shawn ...

While I can't speak from experience on the rifle you ask about, I can tell you this... Charles Daly makes above average firearms (normally) ... in fact, one of the things I'm not that keen on is that he makes them a little bit too pretty for my taste. Having said that, if there's a Daly .22LR for under $200 that's in good shape overall, I'd have no problem giving it a try if I were looking for something along those lines...

Bottom line for me is that even if you didnt like it, and ended up selling to for a few dollars less than you paid for it, you'd still "gain" from the experience ... Then again, that's just one simple man's point of view. Good luck making your decision.

Can't rember where Zastava is now..were several parts to teh company and I do not know where the firearms plats were...was in Yugoslavia before that nation broke into a bunch of little ones...may be in Serbia now...haven't got a map handy to tell you.

First off, you'll have to forgive that company for making the "Yugo" automobile....sometime in the 1950's they got a Fiat plant (with the help of Italy) and started making crappy cars for the Balkland nations....really crappy cars.

Do know they made (and make) a lot of military rifles and have branched (during the realitive peace) into civialian arms.

MAke good solid guns, mostly from steel.

How well those rifles shoot, I have no ideal...am betting they are well made of tradtional steel and wood, good value on today's market (that area of the world is a bit hungry for $ but has a good number os skilled workers).

Got an Interarms Mark X centerfire made at Zastava.... great gun.

Serbs made crappy cars, that's for sure, but I like Yugo mausers! Haven't see the .22s but if the inside of the barrel looks good, I bet it will shoot.

Thanks all for your input. Zastava is still in Yugoslavia. I bought the rifle today, and she sure looks pretty in the gun vault. I'll run a swab through the barrel, and I think I still have some claw mounts and an old scope that I can slap on it and see how it does in the accuracy dept. Got it for $185, and it's a full-size 22 rifle. Good price - with a beautiful piece of walnut on it - when you consider the price of a full-size Rem or Kimber 22 LR (although I'd sure like to have one of those too). Trigger seems a bit rough, but maybe I can remedy that.

Good shooting......

Well all, I can report that the Charles Daly Zastave 22LR is a good shooter. After putting on an ancient 3/4" tube Weaver 2-6X scope on it, and finding out it no longer adjusted, I bought a nice little Simmons 3-9x 32 mm scope on it (with 1/4 MOA adjustments happily), I finally got it zeroed. Easily shoots 3/4" 5-shot groups at 50 yds, and will likely do better should I do it over a proper bench and rest. Apparently they make it in 17 HMR and 22 mag also. So if anyone comes across one, I can recommend them.

Thanks for the good report! Sound like yours goes in the "keeper" pile! I looked at one in Spokane, Washington Wednesday, and I'll have to say that it was a handsome rifle, and as you say, felt like a "real" rifle, being full sized.

God bless,

I love it when I don't get buyer's remorse!

Just curious, why do you keep referring to it as the 'Zastava' model? I haven't found one with that name. Is this the same rifle?

I haven't actually found a retailer for that model yet, so I only know of the $260 tag given to it on the Charles Daly website.

Because Charles Daly rifles, and the Mauser actions like the one I've got sitting on my desk in front of me right now, say "CHARLES DALY BY ZASTAVA" in big bold letters on the side of the action.

If your gun shop does business with Jerry's sports, which includes many regional suppliers, they will have access to the CD product line. I called KBI and asked who where the stocking distributors that I might steer my dealer to and that is who they gave me, you might get a different answer depending on your region of the country.
