I like the Marlin rear sights on my M39 Golden and M1895, so much so that I want to put them on my two 336’s.

I measured the sights on the 39 and 1895 and they are identical, which surprised me. I then looked them up at Numrich and the part numbers look like this:

Marlin 1895 – Rear sight 407610B – Front Sight 403040B
Marlin 39 – Rear Sight 417350A – Front Sight 403040C

I don’t know why the rear sight part numbers don’t match as they are identical sights.

And then, for the 336 they list the parts as:

Marlin 336 C, CS, ER, RC, TS – Rear sight 407610A – Front Sight 403040B

Both of my 336’s have the lower quality “Rocky Mountain Sights”, which aren’t even listed for sale as far as I can tell. One has the ramp front sight and the other a dovetail in the barrel for a sight insert. The height of the two types of front sights are identical though.

Has anyone ordered either the 407610 or the 417350 for installation on the 336? What do the letters mean at the end of the part numbers? I am guessing it is just some sort of inventory number, not really related to the gun.

Just a guess... the notches on the elevator ram may be cut differently for the centerfire vs. the rimfire.

The other parts are probably the same, to save manufacturing costs.

That is a good idea. I'll check it out.

I checked them and they are the same, both have seven levels of adjustment and look the same at least as close as my eye can tell.

I think these parts are the same.

I ordered two new rear sights from Numrich today so I let you know how they work. I am hoping I won't need higher front sights.

Weeeeelllll,

My two Marlin sights came today from Numrich. The sight height is different from the 1895 and my M39. They are a lot shorter and more closely match the “Rocky Mountain” sights they are going to replace.

A few questions about installing these sights.

With the barrel pointed down range, the sight should slide in right to left, correct?

I may need to file the sight dovetail a little to get things going.

The sight rail is arched down so I am going to have to put a piece of cardboard between the sight and the barrel to keep from scratching the barrel.

Has anyone got any suggestions to add before I take my file and brass punch and get to work?

BTW, I am installing these new sights on a 1948 and 1967 336RC.

Happy Shooting,

O/W,

You are correct regarding the direction to drift your sights. With the barrel pointed downrange the old sights should drift out from left to right, and when replacing them, the new sights drift in from right to left.

However, when fitting your new sights, if file work is mandated, use the file on your sights, not the barrel dovetails! Sights are expendable, and easily replaced, curing an oversize dovetail in a barrel is another matter :D

Let us know how they work out for you.

God bless,

Thanks Marshall.

I decided not to wait any longer last night and got to work. The sights went on a lot easier than I thought, I had both mounted and visually centered in about 15 minutes.

It looks like the dovetail on my 1948 336 is slightly off axis. The sight is canted to the left when looking down the barrel. It is not the sight, I noticed it when I had a Williams WDOS installed on it. Maybe in 1948 the Marlin manufacturing lines were still coming up to speed after WWII and they had a few kinks to work out. The cant isn't that bad, I could probably fix it by filing the SIGHT dovetail.

Next step is to load up some cartridges and get ready for the range.

Prior to that, I'll remove the bold and bore sight as well as I can.
