Hello everybody. Im new here and im not sure if this is the right spot to put the thread in but never the less....... Well, anywayz im gonna get to the point. Im looking for my first rimfire rifle and was looking at the .22 mag. rifles. I've done some studies recently and have a short list. Im mainly looking for accuracy outta the bunch. I know .17 HMR are more accurate and better velocity but i've concluded that .22 are more powerful with greater SD / frontal area , etc so I'd rather go with that for now. Besides I dont plan on shooting open fields this season (maybe the next). Please recommend one or just feel free to recommend others. Thank you.
WHICH ONE WOULD YOU BUY?
-CZ model 452 Lux/American/Varmint
-Marlin Model 983S
-Henry Acu Bolt
-Savage 93 series magnum

It depends on what you prefer, handles well and can afford. What are planning to hunt or will you merely punch paper? The .22 mags. are fine guns, but the ammo is expensive for plinking. The .17 HMR is even more costly to shoot.
All of the rifles choices you listed seem just fine. I own a Marlin 882 and an 883 and like them. All the best...

I'll go along with Gil, The 22 mag is expensive to shoot, where I can put a brick a month of 22lr for under ten dollars. If I need something with more power I go with a centerfire varmit rifle. I can load almost as cheap as the mag.
I shoot a CZ Lux with a Weaver 2.5-10 on it. With no wind it will group an inch or a little more at a hundred yards.
I looks and feels much like the bolt action centerfires I hunt with and gives me good practice are a really reasonable cost. when I do take it small game hunting I try to keep shots under 75 yards in respect to the game.

Amen to the .22 Long Rifle chambering especially for you first gun. As stated you can shoot all day for around $8.99 a brick of 500 rounds, also very inherently accurate round. I've been shooting my 10/22 Ruger for almost 30 years and never tire of it. I've added over years sevral improvements from Volquartsen making this gun a real tackdriver. My next gun will probably be a Henry Goldenboy levergun though not sure if 22LR or 22 mag.

Yes every one needs a .22LR. In fact two or three.

Well, here's a little story. My father owns a .22 LR rifle and I've been shooting it since I was 13 years old. It's not actually mines and I never felt like doing that father - son passing rifles to the generation after the next thing :D My step-father owns the ruger 77 series including .17 hmr and .22 lr .... I've shot both before and was pretty satisfied. Ruger's bolt action rifles would've been on my list too but why get em when someone close to you already owns em...? I've never shot .22mag before and after looking at some reviews and charts I concluded that .22mag seems fit for me ^_^ Oh and BTW lets put the price aside and deal with quality plus, im only hunting squirrels. You get what you pay for right ;)

By the way 3rexII7 welcome to the forum. You might take a look at the new CZ 453, it comes with the set triggers like the 527's. They are a single set and work really well.
My 452 Lux has Erick Brooks trigger kit in it and breaks at 2 pounds like ice. This 14 buck trigger kit can with the supplied springs go from ounces to pounds.
I like the lux because of the 25 inch barrel. It is so quiet. Anyway good luck in your search and welcome again.

That's a nice looking rifle, Bob. That rifle rest looks homemade though.
:p But very effective and funtional I'm sure. I wish I had a welder so I could gin up useful tools like that.
Everyone should have a 22 LR, or ten.

Sorry about that. When you were talking about getting a 22 rifle you mentioned the CZ 452. That's the 22 I now own. CZ introduced single set triggers a couple of years ago in some of their centerfire rifles and this year introduced a new 22 rifle called the 453 with a single set trigger.
A single set trigger is actually a trigger with two different pull weights that can be set to different amounts.
If you cock the rifle and pull the trigger It will shoot like a normal rifle with a 2 thru 4 pound trigger pull.
If you cock the rifle and push the trigger forward it will "set" the trigger and now will fire with a 2- 5 ounce trigger pull.
This single set trigger makes the rifle very nice for target work with the extremly light trigger and can be used as a field gun with a normal trigger.
There is a fella whom specializes in CZ extras for us CZ fans. His name is Erick Brooks and his stuff along with a lot of good articles on CZ 452's can be found at this site.
http://cz452.com/
He makes a set of trigger springs and a sleeve for one of the trigger pins that makes the good CZ 452 triggers into great triggers at a really low cost.
Check out the FAQ section if your looking at CZ's there is a lot of good info there.
I didn't mean to get you mixed up. I hope this better explains it.

Faucettb :
what's up guy? Hey, I have a quick question. Is there a difference between the 452 Lux and the 452 FS model besides looks and weight/(barrel)length? I think the FS looks pretty nice, but what do you think? Would YOU buy an FS? Thanks!
P.S. hopefully you view this because your PM is closed. Anybody with CZ knowledge help plz.

one mor e thing, don';t buy into the "22 mags aren't accurate" load , they are. there are a couple of 30 and 33 grn mag rounds out there, i know remington makes one with a vmax tip, that leaves the bbl at 2100-2200 fps. almost as fast as the 17 hmr but with twice the grain weight. ouch to the varmints!
