I just bought my first new in box rifel in 20 years.

The fit and finish on this 1894fg looks great.

How does everybody like to break in a new rifel and with what type of ammo?

DTapp, welcome to Beartooth! Post any time, most here are full of info.-must be kind of slow now.
Break in is different for many. My last break in was 5 shots of 1 and clean after every shot, next was 5 groups of 3 shots and clean after every 3shots, next and final was 5 shots of 5 and clean after ever 5. Bullet selection is up to you and your pocket book for use. I suspect you to use the cheapest to break in. I broke mine in with hardcast due to my use of hardcast but if you choose to use jacketed bullets then break in with jacketed. My next barrel is a .338-06 chambering by PacNor and is not completed yet-takes some time to get a rifle built. But I expect to use jacketed in that newly built as jacketed is more suitable in regards to the caliber. My process of break-in is likely to be the same.
Regards.

There was a big discussion about this a week or so ago over at MO. It pretty much comes down to what ever you want to do. I have had several new rifles over the past 20+ years and I have always just taken them out and shot them till my shoulder was sore :D My 32 H&R mag was new this past year and has yet to see a patch go down the barrel. It has several hundred rounds down the tube. The best group for score in Ranch Dogs postal match was something like .500 or .501 I had groups that were pretty much one hole groups but were not in the center of the target.

Once cleaned it seems like it take quite a few rounds to get the accuracy back. In the days or corrosive ammo rifles needed to be cleaned everytime they were shot. Today that is not a problem. I let accuracy dictate when I clean my rifles anymore. If the accuray drops off they get cleaned. I have a Ruger .204 that will be 2 years old in May and has yet to see a patch. Last Sunday I took a crow off hand at 200 yards and took several at right around 100 yards. That rifle doesnt not lack in the accuracy dept and it is a hunting barrel the slim tapered 20 in barrel. It is a dealer of death to coyotes :)

But again it boils down to what ever you feel is right. The bottom line is to shoot it!! AND have fun doing it.
