I have run across an early octagon barreled M1899 Savage in .303 Sav. There is a lengthwise groove in the top of the receiver ring. (Kind of like the sighting groove on the topstrap of some older pistols)
My question is: Is this original or has somebody been busy with a file.?

I don't think it is stock, can you send me a picture, my email is leslie.l.green@savagela.org see if you can match it to any of the 1899's here http://savagela.org Also with the octagon barrel if it is a full octagon it is an 1899 B. They are a little hard to find, if it has condition i would suggest picking it up if it can be had for less than 500. Les
