This is a boar I hunted at Tioga Preserve, Pennsylvania last year. The first year I owned a modern digital camera. One of these days I'll learn how to convert "paper photos" to digital so I can share many more 99 Savage photos.

This 99 (.308) was a gift from my folks way back in the early 1970's. It has joined me for many successful hunts across North America.

My Dad (deceased 2004) hunted with a 99 Savage (300) for many decades. The older type with spool magazine and flip up tang sight. He shot several dozen elk during the years our family ranched in Park County, Wyoming. None got away.

99 Savage is a keeper!

I had a 99 in .243, and am very sorry I sold it. I would like to someday have a 99 in .300 or .250-3000. I have a hard time justifying another rifle when I have more than I need now, but someday.

Gents,

I own two 99s, and I really like them, although they can be confounding at times. My rifles seem to be very particular with what they want to shoot straight, and although they never really shoot poorly, I have not gotten the consistancy with these rifles that I have with some others.

I believe the first is a worked over 99T in 300, and also a 99A in 375. I'd really like to get a chance to shoot something with that 375 and the Barnes 255 Orginal, even thought whatever it was would have to be fairly close, as those bullets won't have that much reach at 375 Win velocity.

The Good Lord willing, one day I may have a grandchild to pass them down to.

Best to you all.

Steve

I have always thought a 308, or 250-3000 would be just a nice rifle to have, maybe a 7-08?

I finally got around to buying a Savage 99 a couple of months ago. Mine is a 99F (for featherweight, it only weighs 6.5 lbs) in .300 Savage. It was made in 1956, so it's drilled & tapped, but I haven't quite made up my mind to scope it yet. So far, I like it a lot.

Wheels, I love my 99's, I have 300's, 250's 303's and even a 284. My favorite though are my 303's. Tumbleweeds, I suggest a Leupold fixed power scope for your F. TJust seem to go together. I have one on my A Saddlegun and it is nice not having to adjust the diopter down or up. Les

I had 2 '99's up till last week...a 300 savage EG and a DL series A in 308 with a monte stock.

I just sold the 300, choosing to stay with 1 caliber hunting rifle[s] as all my other "hunting" guns are .308 also.
The design is for sure way ahead of it's time for when it was introduced. Good dependable guns.

The gun here is the 308, wearing an oldie but goodie Kollmorgan bearcub 2.75x scope

Montana newbie here,

I have a 99E, series A, .243 that my Dad gave me for my first hunting rifle in 1979 on my 14th b-day. Without boring stories I have harvested many deer and antelope with it some of which were amazing shots with the original pop-up iron sight, (it is drilled but never mtd a scope). Straight out of the box it was deadly and hasn't changed to date.
(EXCEPT) :(
When I was 14 I replaced the butt plate and put on an aftermarket with some cussion. (I must have been a weenie). I could kick myself because I don't know what ever happened to the original. Can anyone help with an original butt plate??????? It means a lot now! This gun is in "Very Good" condition except for that.

I also recently inherited my Gramma's old hunting rifle. A model 99DL, series A, .308 with the gold trigger, round counter and a Redfield fixed 4X scope that was mounted when the gun was new. I'm not a professional but I think it might rate somewhere between Fine and Mint condition (even the scope). It was her last rifle and didn't get much handling before it, and her retired hunting. This year I almost took it on my elk hunt one time to honor Gramma but just couldn't bring myself to do it. It's just too fine.

Any comments are appreciated. Now I'm getting the bug and want to find the .303 sister.

Morty, seems like I saw some 99 buttplates on gunbroker.com

Love'em. Have a 300 EG that has not been tapped and a 250/3000 of my father-in-laws with an old 4x Weaver. That 250 with 100 gr corelokts or silvertips does well on deer. Plan on putting a receiver sight on the 300 for this next season.

Thanks for the help yellowhouse, but unfortunately they don't have what I need. If I remember correctly it was made of plastic. I'm told that the 99"E" was the economy model, but what a sweet shooting .243.

Still looking.

Thanks for the help Kragman,

I've been there too. Unfortunately there were so many variations in this run that reproductions are confused. I have two aftermarkets plates, (ordered by exact model) that aren't even close.

I'm hoping to find an original plastic plate. Wish me luck, I'm finding out that this particular 99 part is RARE.

Thanks for the welcome,
morty

Morty:

try this site (http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/ubb/postlist/Board/40/page/1), the campfire, as this link is to their sub board all about the savages.

The board can be rough at times, but these guys know their stuff!

My 99 in .300 also has the safety at the lever. It had a flip-up peep sight on it when I got it back in 1963. I had to install a scope because of eye problem but am holding on to the peep sight. It will all be handed down to family. Love that gun. Wish I had a 250 also.

Hello all Savage 99 fans.
I`m new here at this forum.
Got my 99c in 1997.Had to buy it straight from the Savage arms co. and was forced to
wait 8 months for it.There is no regular sale of 99`s here in Norway.
I bought it in cal. 308 win. but had it fitted with a new Douglas barrel in cal. 358 win.
in `98.
It is the best looking lever I`ve ever seen and probably the strongest mecanism in any
lever I`ve heard of.
Is there anyone who know what the 99ce are priced at.
Would realy like to have one of those.
Thanks for all info.

I have a .358 brush gun. It is well used but still does the old bang-flop on whitetails. I use the economical 200 gr Remington bulk bullets. Round nose and pointed both hit to the same poi to 200 yards in a minute of deer way. I'm quite lucky to be the third owner and she has a name of honor. I named her after a revered family member for her dependability! Bandito

Great to see so many savage fans here. I started collecting mine in the mid 70's.
I have had:
.22 Savage HP take down
250-3000 w/peep sight
30-30 full octagon barrel and tang peep
300 Savage
300 Savage w/scope now w/peep sight
303 Savage take down
.308 Win. w/scope barrel shortened to 18" and forearm cut to schnable design
They are all great rifles, I sold the .22 HP, 250-3000, the 300 that had the most wear
when I needed a new outboard. Should never have done that.

I'll be the whipping boy here. :o

A Savage 99C is one of the only guns I've ever sold because I disliked it that much.

It was a .308 Win. It kicked like a mule. The trigger broke (and not cleanly at all) at about 16 lbs. (give or take). The action worked with all the smoothness of tank tracks. And it would not group under about 3" at 100 yards. I traded it for a Model 70 Lightweight Carbine in .308 and was much better off.

My dad & brother have been using a pair of consecutively numbered 99C 308's since about 1972 and have killed dumptruck loads of deer with them. "God bless 'em" is what I say.

Never had one but it brings back such warm memories. As a very young man, the guys I learned to hunt with featured a character (wonderful guy) called Pap by all. He was a WW1 vet. He hunted with a Savage 99 in 300 Savage for the last 50 years of his life. Took many a PA deer and some bear with it. By the time I saw it, it was worn and well used but always faithful to the designers intent. Just as purely American as baseball and apple pie. I am sorry all the wiz bang stuff passed it by. It represents a great time and great people in simpler days.
