So, instead of our yearly goose trip to texas panhandle, my partner and I are wondering about an antelope hunt in Montana. Can we camp-out, go to a sporting goods store and buy a tag, and hunt on BLM or public hunting land and have a reasonable chance at a buck(doe?)? Never hunted pronghorns before, killed 20plus whitetails- never had a shot over 60 yards!
Be prepared to shoot a tad over 60 yds on speed goats! :D

Be prepared to shoot a tad over 60 yds on speed goats! :DThis past trip, I had to shoot almost 300 (294 yds) in a stiff 90 degree wind (high-20s), while my buddies had chip shots from 80 and 140 yards. (From prone with lots of time.) Just depends, but they got lucky IMHO!

Sorry about not getting back, but my power was off for 8 days because of an ice-storm(northeast Oklahoma). Anyway, I understand that hunting conditions will be different, but are there public use areas, south and southeast Montana, where a decent chance can be had? Camping nearby. Easy to get permits. I enjoyed the back and forth on another thread about calibers. I figure my T/C G2 30-30 will be sufficent. It shoots 150gr. Hornadt SST's into 3/4 inch at 100yrds., with enough fps to kill to 300yrds. If I have to shoot much beyond 200, then i guess I should just be a better hunter.

IS it possile to find a public antelope hunting area near a public camping area in south or southeast Montana?????? No outfitter, no"Ya gotta know someone". You just go to the BLM land or public hunting area and start scouting. I can camp in the wilderness without feeling discomfort, I can spot, stalk and kill game. What I can't do is afford an outfitter. I tried to get information on a previous thread, but they just want to talk about ho0w long their shots are. I don't even care if we are successful. Several blown stalks in several days just sounds great fun.
Have you tried Googling the Montana Game and Fish, or Conservation, or whatever they call themselves? That's one of the best ways of using the computer in finding the info you want. They should have maps and regulations.

Try for area 690. As a Montana native I hunted speed goats there a bunch. Lot's of BLM land and lot's of goats. It's south of Chinook and north of the Missouri river. Beware of rain though. If a cloudburst comes even in late fall you'll need chains and a lot of luck to get out of some of the places. Clay turns to greased lightning in a hurry.
Seems like 3 mile ridge is where I did most of my hunting.
