Nice Hog! Always thought they were huge filthy critters, but that one looks good enough to eat :D . I may have to give hog hunting a try.

You're right on both accounts. They are huge and filthy but they are good eatin'. ;)

Just had some ribs last night from the last big pig I killed. Wow, were they ever good.

Cooked in the oven for about 7 hours or so at 250F, then finished on the grill for a little smoke flavor.....

I'm getting hungry again, just thinking about it :D

This may get lengthy and if so, I apologize.

To begin, the man, Ranch Dog. First impression is how tall he is. Big
however, not only in legend but in physical size too. What you can't
see is the big heart this man has. He tried to make our hunt a
memorable one and he succeeded 100%. Michael and his family are the
most hospitable folks you would ever meet. My son & I were fed, housed,
guided, provided with rifles to use, trusted, met neighbors, shown
optional stand locations, anything we could have wanted would have
cheerfully been provided. RD's mother & father are some of the nicest
folks you could meet. RD's dad, Milo, was my primary guide and general
pick-up & drop off man. Mrs. RD, Dianna, prepared the delicious meals
and because of hunting late some of our evening dinners were quite
late. And she always has that warm, pretty smile which makes a fellow
feel right at home. VTDW was right on the money when he spoke of the
beautiful Dianna.

Plans were underway for the first evening hunt within 15 minutes after
our arrival. Our rifles were ready and first order of business was the
sight-in. That was done in short order so we were ready. Late afternoon
and we were taken to our stands. Mine was in a brushy pasture with a
view of about 50-60 yds. and my son went into a tower blind with RD.
The landscape was so different than our home turf and the weather was
sunny and dry. No hog sightings on the first day. However, that first
evening, and every other time on stand, I saw deer, which is always a
pleasant sight. Friday morning there were four antlered bucks browsing
in front of me! Again, no hogs seen. Now, RD seemed to be concerned
that we weren't seeing any hogs. Given the option to choose another
spot, I decided to stay with the original stand since I believe the
more time spent in one good spot the better chance of seeing something.
My son however chose to hunt a promising tripod seat stand in the
brush. He chose wisely as he was barely settled for the evening hunt
when he heard what sounded like a brisk wind approaching. It was a herd
of hogs running toward him through the brush. He couldn't see, but
could hear them for a long time before they appeared. How many? He
guessed anywhere from 15 to 30 hogs! RDs instructions were to shoot at
the first available target and that's what Mike did. That 450 Marlin
with RD's 425 gr. bullet smacked & killed the intended target, killed a
much smaller hog standing behind the first, and knocked down a third
hog which struggled to its feet and ran off! Magic bullet? Should be
great advertising for the new RD bullet mould enterprise.

From my stand I heard that shot and held onto my phone waiting for the
call. I got the good news a few minutes later. Great! Just being there
was satisfying and the kill was icing on the cake. I, holding onto RD's
336SC in 35 Rem., waited to see a hog but it wasn't in the cards. But
like every other father I am always more pleased when my son is
successful. I was happy!

Butchering was done Friday night, skinning and getting the meat off the
bones wasn't completed until late in the evening so we had dinner
around 10:30!

Saturdays hunts brought deer sightings but no more hogs.

We did some sightseeing too. There are a couple of historic missions a
short drive south of Cuero and we came away with much new found
knowledge of the great state of Texas.

Participating in the Postal Match is great fun, winning the top prize,
seeing Texas and meeting the Reamys was just wonderful. What an
unforgettable time we had! In fairness to the PM participants, I
requested my name be withdrawn from the possibility of winning again.
Not because I didn't enjoy being there but rather to give another
shooter a chance to enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Ranch Dog, I can never thank you enough for our hunt. Long live Texas!

Thanks for the kind words Steelbanger, we sure enjoyed your company! You and your son, Mike, were gracious guests. I enjoyed the time I spent in the blind with Mike and it feels good to see you enjoy each other so much. Kind of like my father and I do. Always at each other in a good way, look for every drop of fun life has to offer!

I wish the hogs would have been a little more plentiful but that's the way it goes sometimes. I'm glad you got to meet some of the people I spend my life with. When I told Ben how many hogs Mike shot with the one boolit, I thought he was going to split a seam! He said, "now dares a good fellow that knows how to kill them cottonpicker hogs!"

RD mentions how my son & I get along. The following quote is from an e-mail from him to me today.

"I took a few minutes to get the latest on the forum. Nice write up. You summed it up pretty good, although you could have lingered on the awesome shot placement for a bit........"
