A good friend has a Marlin 45-70 ordered & on the way. I have cast lots of lymans plain base 405 gr bullet. My question is what would make a nice mild target load with that bullet in that gun without using fillers?
Thanks ahead of time again.

Mike,
The load I’m using in the postal match;
Rem. - brass
CCI BR-2, primer
28gr. - H4198
405gr Laser Cast PB sized 0.459”
This is a “Trapdoor Load”, not much recoil at all, even you could shoot it… ;)

I wouldn’t go that far Mike, the recoil is more of just a “slow push” as compared to the normal crack…Load-up a few and make JB shoot them… :p
The site jackfish gave is a good one too, as are his loads. I’m just a newbie with the 45/70 loading…
BTW- nice shooting in the match Mike.. ;)

Thanks! I have an old original TrapDoor Carbine I haven't shot for a while. When I am loading these for my buddy I'll have to try a few.
BTW I went to the gun shop that has several of your .444s at pretty reasonable prices fully intending to buy one. I ran into a problem though, he had a beautiful Savage Model 99R 300 sav on the rack and it came home instead. I already shot it and it shows signs of being a shooter. I just can't keep money in my pocket, there are too many good toys out there. I guess I have to start building up the funds again and hope the .444's are still there for a while. :)
My brother brought his Ruger 45-70 over not long ago for me to try. He had some pipsqueak 400 grain bullet loads. Three shots was plenty. I'll stick with my 32-20. :D
