what the difference between the xlr444 and the 444 in the blue?
is it just the 22" to the 24" brl?
the xlr is shiny and the other is not?
is there any practical difference?

Other than barrel length and finish I doubt there is any difference. The 24 inch bbl is supposed to be optimized for the Leverevolution ammo.

I own both the current production 444 w/22" bbl., blued with real wood stocks...And the 444 XLR w/24" bbl., stainless with comp. stocks...
Bob pretty much summed it up, get the one that takes your eye first... :D

There is about $125 difference in the price between the 444 and 444XLR (Wal-Mart retail price).

I keep thinking about buying myself a new 444, just the original rifle, not the XLR. It would be hard to beat the Wal-Mart price of $429. Wal-Mart's web site shows only the 444XLR but someone on one of the forums showed me this. Do a google search on any firearm with "Wal-Mart" in the search string and it will bring up Wal-Mart's page that you take in to order the gun! Typing in "walmart 444 Big Bore" in google's search brings up http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=3138488 as the first result... the basic Marlin 444.

Life would be a bunch easier if I could buy the rifle 1 hour south but the u.s. and the Canadian governments are still butting heads about this issue. Wally-world doesnt sell rifles hear that is a mute point, but thanks for the effort. As it stands now the only way I can buy a rifle I the U.S. is if I buy it from a resident, or buy a perment to broker to Canada $1,750.00us.

Man, I paid too much. I got all hot and bothered after reading an article on the 444 (I have 3 45-70 Marlins) and bouth one on line for 439.00 (shipping included). It is in nice shape, but not new. Most 444 Marlins around here are over 500.00 and not available used.
I use the LeverEvolution ammo in mine. It is a nice setup.

Paid too much? the sticker price is not to far off $579.99 blued and 22ed. but what herts is the 13% sales tax and the $30 to $40 reg fee. As for the used market thare is not much of one around hear. If thare was it would be about 50$'s less and I still have to pay 6% sales tax and the reg fee.

Canada, a nice place to visit but the taxes scare them away.

On the 444 XLR i use the Skinner Peep with his front also...
The 444 I use the XS Ghost Ring...
It's going to depend on what your going to use the rifle for as to which peep to get. At the price Tim's getting for his sights,I will be buying more of these... ;)

I have the .444ss , 22" barrel in Blue, and the .450 Marlin in the MXLR. The differences in the basic rifle have been discussed, I love them both. The XLR is a beautiful firearm.

The new model XLR is it the one for new fancy ammo?? If it is the mag spring cap the follower is different. It is dimpled or something to allow for the new pointed bullets. The twist of the barrel is different as well. I think it is jsut a bunch of marketing, but that's what they claim.

I wanted to check my earlier post. The twist for the 30-30 is different the regular Marlin is 1/10" teh XLR is 1/12". The .444 has the same twist for the regular 444, and the XLR.

The twist on the older microgroove .444's is 1/38. It is not recommended for the new ammo. The newer .444's and XLR's atre 1/20 with the Ballard rifling. In fact I thi8nk that all the big bore Marlinsd now have the ballard rfling.

The 1-38" twist of the micro-groove barrel will stablize bullets well over 300 grains, FYI.

I have the 444xlr and hope that the cast will work well in it as the jacketed do.

Congrats wolfpact on your XLR purchase :D . How does it shoot?
You will have no problems shooting both hardcast and jacketed thru it…I’m still working on a jacketed bullet load that will outperform the Hornady 265gr. EV factory loading in both accuracy and velocity, but so far no luck…
As far as cast bullets go, I shoot the BTB 290gr LFNGC in both my 444’s. with very acceptable results…I don’t feel the need to go with a heaver bullet where I live, our critters just are not that big…This is a five shot XLR group using the 290gr BTB  …
