Newbie here, enjoying lots of great reading. Wondering if anyone out there has used a tang sight on a 39 and how did it work out? Should I be concerned with changing the point of impact every time I take the gun down for thorough cleaning?
Thanks !

I don't know about a tang sight but, the Lyman 66 peep is repeatable after cleaning.

If I am not mistaken, with a receiver mounted sight, both front and rear are on the same end of the rifle; that would not be so with a tang mounted sight. I like the look of a tang sight and want the extra radius and the option of folding it down and a buckhorn up.

Not sure I understand what you mean by both sights being on the same end. The front sight is right behind the muzzle, and a receiver sight, like the Lyman 66 or Williams FP or 5D, is mounted just forward of the hammer on the receiver -- opposite ends of the barrel, plus a little more.
A tang sight will give you a little longer sight radius, but only by a couple of inches.
One other thing, though -- where is your serial number, and where are you located? If the S/N is on the top of the tang and you are located in the U.S., installing a tang sight will make the Feds unhappy. Do not drill holes through the serial number, or even cover part of it. Thus saith BATFE.

Guess I'm not making myself clear. Havn't bought the rifle yet, and am in USA. My concern here is that when the rifle comes apart, a tang sight would stay with the buttstock end, while obviously, the front sight stays up at the exit end. each attatched to a separate component. My hope is that someone having such a set up, or experience with one, can say whether it is likely still be at or near zero when put back together. A reciever sight would stay with the barrel ended component and thus, not be affected by dis and re assembly.
I've not owned one of these rifles in over 40 yrs. and so my recollection of how they come apart may be flawed, in which case I've done a lot of unnecessary typing. Thanks for the tip about the S/N. Will be alert for that.

I have taken my wife’s rifle apart quite a few times and I don’t remember ever having a serious change in zero. The new Model 39’s are a pretty tight fit and I admit I don’t take the rifle apart very often.
This link has a picture or two of my wife’s Model 39 with Williams receiver sight and target knobs. You don’t need the windage target knob but the elevation knob is pretty handy.

Edit] In at least one of the pictures you can clearly see the serial numbers on the tang. As was pointed out you need to use a tang sight designed for the Marlin rifles
Just a bit of clarification.....
BATFE.....
"Sec. 478.34 Removed, obliterated, or altered serial number.
No person shall knowingly transport, ship, or receive in interstate
or foreign commerce any firearm which has had the importer's or
manufacturer's serial number removed, obliterated, or altered, or
possess or receive any firearm which has had the importer's or
manufacturer's serial number removed, obliterated, or altered and has,
at any time, been shipped or transported in interstate or foreign
commerce."
I have installed a tang sight that covers part of the serial number, which is stamped on the upper tang. Prior to installation, I called BATFE, and they said it would not pose a problem, since the serial number will not be removed, obliterated, or altered.
