(if this is in the wrong place feel free to move it)

got bill janney's book and he carves with very hi speed dental tools; he also sells these, but the several hundred dollars is somewhat prohibitive. so, what are the alternatives?

the dremel 400 seems to be that co's. most powerful unit, but then i see the bosch roto zip and it has twice the motor and about the same speed range. since the dremel would need to be used with a flex shaft to really be friendly in the hand, why not go up to the bosch and do the same thing with more power? or....????

open to suggestions. don e., whose new 92 rossi is crying out for decoration.

This is a better fit in Gunsmithing. General gets too much traffic and your thread will get pushed out of sight before long. Moved.

You can buy an air powered 50,000 rpm carving tool from Harbor Frieght for under 50 bucks and it's almost the exact same thing.

Try Woodcraft-they have variable speed, air, bits-if they ain't got it, you don't need it.

You don't need a lot of power for a Dremel tool for wood carving; it's not necessary to get the highest power model they've got. The flex shaft is so handy, it's almost a necessity, and variable speed is important too. You can get a cheap knock-off for about $20 that will work just fine, from Harbor Freight, Shucks-Checker-Kragen, etc.
