I have a Ruger Mod77 MkII in .35 whelen that has been shortened to 18". It has a Timney trigger and a Hogue overmoulded stock on it. It has also been mag-na-ported.

It handles like a dream and it's a tackdriver with a number of loads. I would like very much to put one of my Leupold scout scopes on this rifle but am having trouble finding a scout mount to go on it. I was thinking of altering one of the XS mounts I have by putting another dovetail countersink in it and dovetailng above the chamber, and the rear sight tapped holes could hold the front, but I don't know.

There used to be a company that sold what they called "ching-rings" but they were kind of huge and ugly, anyone have any ideas?????????

Sure just get a couple of bases with the right barrel diameter and drill and tap and install them just ahead of the action. Brownell's sells the bases. You can always remove them if you ever decide to sell the gun and install some filler screws in the holes. You could also do this with a one piece base with the bottom milled to the taper of the barrel. Important thing is to make them level with the bore. This would let you use fewer holes in the barrel.

I just don't trust a scope base mounted in the sight groove unless it extends back on the action and is mounted on the front scope base holes also.

Thanks Bob, I found one at Brownell's for Remingtons that looks like it may be pretty easily adaptable.

I don't know why they haven't made more mounts for more bolt rifles. All the military arms have them now, and they are very popular with the lever action group. It makes the rifles much easier to carry also.
