Hi Guys,
You guys know that I am building those old pair a Hawes S.A. 45LC. I got the first one done,(I thought) went to the range yesterday because the temp was AWESOME!!
Put live ammo in the old baby shot 3 or 4 shots and it hung up, would not cock! ISo I pulled the cylinder pin fought around getting the cylinder out, looked things over couldn't see anything realy wrong. Reloaded it shot 3-4 and it locked up again! So I put it away, got my open tops out shot them some and came home.
After getting home, I took the old hawes apart, did somemore inspection!
The only thing I can see that might be causing problems is the firing pins hitting so hard that they might be pushing the outter rim of the primer out just enough to catch!

I put these old guns toghter with parts bought from 4 places, and the only parts that I haven't had to work on was the parts that I got from Superior Ind. out of Glendora Ca.. Ken's parts all fit like a glove, the rest of those parts were junk!
Okay, Hawes have a firing pin assbliy that is a 3 piece that you screw in the frame. Right off the bat, they wouldn't fit in the gun, so I had to ream out the hole, the firing pins were way to short, they lacked a 1/16" of coming out of the frame, so I had to make them longer, I am going to take my time today and shorten them to the right lenght!

If that isn't the problem, what can I look for? No end shake, no up and down movement of the cylinder.

I am lost! I would be very great full for ANY ADVICE!

Thanks Greg

Only two things to check come to mind. It's out of time or the bullets are slipping forward from recoil and not enough crimp to lock the cylinder up. I'm not much of a single action guy to really give you any real help.

Timing is great, had it check. Shooting cowboy loads, even did that on some wax loads, i thought that on the wax loads because I used stanard primers instead of drilling them out for the shotgun primes.
Thanks for the help!

Common causes for your problem are:
1. Too little cylinder gap. A little bit of crud will cause the cylinder to drag on the barrel.
2. Fired cartridges are dragging on the recoil shield. This can be caused by several things, but the most common is primer setback, especially with mouse phart loads.
3. Firing pin piercing primers and sticking.

I believe you might of hit the nail on the head! I shorten the firing pin on the hammer side. Since it was 37 degrees and raining and we don't have a indoor range out here in the middle of no where, I loaded 6 cases with just primers only and it cycled fine. The wheater doesn't look good for the next few days, but when it stops raining and snowing. I will be out and test fire it. If that fixes it. Then I got to find a hand for that other one, and then get it timed, and I will have them done! I can't believe after posting on a lot of forums looking for a hand, that no one out there had a old worn out Colt hand, or a Uberti hand, ect. aany S.A. with the big pin I can make work, it's looking like I will bit the bullet and wait and see if Nurich gets some in, they be out for 4 months.

Thanks for the advice Pard
Greg
