I bought a used Remington 700 .270 that was already scoped. I took it to the range and it shot incredibly well. Today as I was admiring the rifle and I noticed that when you look straight down at the top of the rifle that the open sights are off center. They looked to be aligned but are tilted off to the left like the barrel was not put in straight up and down. There is an equal sized gap on both sides of the barrel where it sits in the stock so I don't think it's off center, plus if it were I don't think it would be shooting so well. Should I bother taking it to a gunsmith to have him check it out or should I just leave it alone?

You may have a rebarreled action or the barrel was taken off for some reason and when tightened back on it was over tightened. If it shoots good and you don't plan on using the sights don't worry.

The sights are screwed on and can be removed and fuller plug screws put in the holes. I doubt that the open sights are going to work very well if they are off center the way you describe. You'll have to use a small brass drift to knock out the front sight off the ramp to get at the front sight mount screw that's under the sight.

My 2 cents.
