I bought a second hand Remington 700 "AWR" 300 mag 2 years ago and have been having problems with it, so I took it to a local gunsmith and he told me that it was a 30-06 that had been converted to a 300 mag and that the headspacing was not correct. He offered me the option of a factory barrel installed for $600 or a custom barrel+blueprinting for $1200+. I would like to hear your guys opinions on weather I'm getting screwed around or if I have any other options. Your opinion is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.

Considering I've seen factory Remington take-off barrels at gun shows for around $40, the prices you were quoted seem a bit excessive.

Do you handload? Excessive headspace can somewhat be overcome by careful sizing of the brass. What sort of problems did you see?

I'd sure check with some other gunsmiths. What kind of problems are you having with it? We've got some pretty savvy folks here that may be able to help you out or point you in the right direction. I don't thing it would cost you anywhere near that to have Remington fix your rifle. Heck for that kind of money you could buy a new one.

Don't know what the going rate of gunsmiths are in your area, but around here that would be pretty excessive.

As suggested, you should look around for other 'smiths and see what they have to say. Also, if you describe the problems the many savvy members here on the board can possibly help you.

Ask him what he would charge to set the barrel back one or 2 threads and rechamber.
