I just bought a new 22, and got 1500 rounds to go with it. I am planning on going out next weekend to shoot. I had originally planned to shoot the entire 1500 rounds, but a friend of mine told me that if I shot 1500 round in one day that I would melt the barrel of my gun. As I have never heard of this happening, I was wondering if anyone could give me info on this. I have never actually went through that many rounds in one day in one gun. Is there any truth to this?

Crimson,
Depends on how long of a day you plan to do the shooting in!:D In eight hours, you have 480 minutes...let's just round that to 500. You'd have to shoot 3 rounds per minute to burn through the 1500 rounds. That's probably not going to "melt the barrel" in a 22 rf, but I'd think you'd want to stop and have a sandwich and a soda mid-way! And, are you loading clips or tubes in this shooting? Either way, 1500 rounds in one day is a lot of shooting! The fouling in the action might stop your shooting for awhile anyway, until you clean it, thus requiring you to ratchet up your rate of fire to compensate for your down-time!;)

Eley ammunition testers probably put 1500 rounds through a rifle before they stop for tea. I seriously doubt if you can shoot fast enough to heat up the barrel to the point you can't hold it with your bare hand, and that's usually thought of as the critical point. You can cook the barrel of a high velocity centrefire. The late Bob Milek confessed to doing it, one afternoon when he had only a .220 Swift, too much ammo and too many prairie dogs.
Your real problem with that much shooting in one day is that you're overtraining, for lack of a better word. At some point you'll get tired or lose your focus, and start shooting worse. If you continue you'll only teach yourself some bad habits (techniques). Stop when you feel you're losing it and come back another day.

I've never shot that many in a day, but with the two grand daughters we've went thru a brick of 550 without any problems. I'd have to say that shooting that many rounds in on session would be way past fun. I'd doubt if you'll melt a barrel, but instead of going out and having fun you'd just be seeing how many you could shoot in a set period of time.
I'd try for the fun part of shooting and throw in some accuracy and learning shooting skills instead of just seeing how many rounds you can put down the barrel. Of course I think differently than some. Got friends whom are into the machine gun thing and they shoot thousands of rounds into the side of the hill and think it's lots of fun.

I doubt that I will be shooting all 1500 rounds. I was just curious if melting the barrel would be a concern when shooting a great amount of ammo.

Dragon,
You may tell your friend that I said his comment about melting the barrel is the stuff that urban legends are made of which is bull.;)

1500 rounds isn't going to melt your barrel, but you might just melt down. That's a lot of shooting, and you'd be lucky to hit the berm by the end of the day. :D

You can melt the barrel of a fully auto , I know I've had bullets go out the side of a barrel before but I doubt you could get that rate of fire out of your 22 . Have fun and shoot the heck out it thats what 22's are for . I have an old marlin 22 semi auto thats been through several kids and God only knows how many rounds and it still shoots quite nicely .

Times sure have changed. When I was a boy, I felt kinda wasteful if I shot a box of 50 in a days time. A few years ago, I was in awe as I witnessed two of my nephews go through a brick in two or three hours.
I'm not ready to see 1500 rounds yet.

It ain't gonna happen with regular .22.
You won't be able to load magazines fast enough to sustain a rate of fire that would melt the barrel of a 22 LR. Assuming it's possible at all, which is no sure thing.

Don't take shooting advice from that friend, he obviously doesn't know what he's talking about.
Full auto .308, assuming you had enough magazines, sure, you could probably melt the barrel. On a rimfire, never.

barrel wont melt but you can affect accuracy with semi autos.. if they shoot as nuch as 18
at a time..ive watched as the impact point dropped the hotter the barrel got on my 22 at its max range of 100..im more of a make one shot count person now ,,to be young,,ahh
one thing if a person were to buy an 22 pistol i would encourage them to wait and see what ammo it likes before buying that much ammo..

1500 rounds of 22 won't melt your barrel
