Does anyone know who is actually making the 30/30 levergun that is on Mossbergs webpage?

As far as I've read, Mossberg is.

I handled one last weekend at the gunshop. It appears to have some features copied from both Marlin & Winchester. No crime in that. Components and fit appear to be quite good.

Price was $425. which seems high to me at least. Same store typically has a couple used-but-not-abused Marlin 30-30's for $225. Used rifles are often very good deals.

I have not seen one "in the flesh", but have read lots of info on them, and know one fellow who recently bought one. He seems happy with his. It has a certain "classic levergun" look that is attractive to me, and the design seems a sensible combination of sound, proven features from Marlin and Winchester.

Mossberg should have a winner there. The only problem I see is their price point. I can get a brand-new 336 for $300 or so, and while I'd consider buying a Mossberg, I'd at least like to get upgraded wood and perfect wood/metal fit for an extra $100-150. I hope that the market price stabilizes at a level that will encourage Mossberg to keep producing them.

The examples I have seen have hardwood furniture(ugly). For that price, I need to see some walnut.

If the rumors of FM reproducing the Win 94 prove true, Mossberg could be out of the game.

FN could, indeed, give them a death blow with a reintroduced 94, if it's made in America either at a price competitive with the Marlin or at a quality level that would make a higher price justifiable. That's why I think Mossberg is off base -- they have little to offer that's really better than the competition, and if they're going to succeed at a premium price they need to supply a premium rifle.

With the modern FM production facilities available in South Carolina (as opposed to the antiquated Winchester site in Connecticut), the manufacture of the M70 beginning there and the depressed dollar...

I saw one of the Mossbergs at a gun store yeaterday and it is a good mix of Marlin and Winchester features. I know there is a rumor about the M94 being reintroduced that could scuttle the Mossy, but it seems like a pretty weak rumor and my gut tells me that FN may not want to get back in that business when they have license to produce M71s, 1886s, etc. What worries me is that I'm not sure what kind of quality Mossberg can produce. In my experience, QC at Mossberg can be a crapshoot. I've had very good luck with most of their products, but some weren't much good. For example, I bought one of Mossbergs last forays into producing a high powered rifle platform (SSI-One) that was actually a single shot rifle/shotgun like a T/C or NEF. Interesting action, very nice looking gun, but not very functional and it lasted about 3 yrs (?). However, based on the one Mossy I've seen I'd pay $425 for it rather than $500 for a newly mfgd M94 of the quality USRA was putting out the last few years. Right now I'd say that the 336 is a bargain in comparison to either the Mossy or a USRA M94, but who knows where QC at Marlin will go with Cerberus at the helm.

A bit off topic, but of more interest to me it seems like there might be a niche for bolt gun sales right now in the < $400 range as both Savage and Rem. have moved out of that price range. Marlin is making one (XL7) and Mossberg keeps trying - first with their 4x4 and now the ATR. I like the Marlin best of the 3.

I have a small collection of Mossberg 22s, had one of their pump shotguns for a while, and of course the SSI-ONE. Based on those purchases I think they should stick to what they are good at, but their ill fated junkets into the centerfire province doesn't seem to be doing much to improve their rimfire or scattergun products.

You guys know that Mossberg has been down this road before. Their 472 lever was pretty much a copy of the Marlin 336. Interestingly the trigger moved with the lever.

Now this 464 is a pretty good copy of the Winchesters. I handled one, didn't like the way it felt, and the price was too high in my estimation.

They just can't seem to get it right.

There are several of the Mossberg 464s on Gunbroker for $370, some with free shipping even.

I love mine! Have had near 400 rounds through it now. I initially had teething problems, Mossberg had a batch of bad extractors, incorrectly tempered. They would break very easily. I now have a new extractor, and it's run like the proverbial 'top' since.

I even rented a reamer and 'Ackley Improved' the thing. My goal is to duplicate or beat factory Hornady Leverevolution ballistics with off the shelf powder. 2400-2500 fps should be reachable with a 30-30 Ackley Improved with a Hornady 160 grain FTX bullet on top.

I have a call into XS Sights, who says they are making a rear ghost ring to fit the 464. I am excited to see what this thing can do with a little hot-roddin'. Fit and finish is fine on mine -- it's utilitarian. This is a rifle I'm going to use and carry, so it will likely get a little dinged up. I don't have any big gaps or stock fitment problems -- mine seems to be fairly tight everywhere wood meets steel.

Saw one at a gunshow. Was affraid to touch it....scared something might jump off on me that could be tranferable to one of my guns at home.

Got down close to it and gave it a good goin' over. Even smelled bad. Kinda like a Lorcin,Davis,or Jennings.

Probably was made at the Yugo factory out of old Gremlin and Pinto parts.

I handled one at a local store, and as far I am concerned it's a piece of junk, like a lot other Mossberg stuff. I also recently read a thread on Paco's Leverguns, about at least one person who bought one and has had nothing but problems. There are way too many good used Winchesters and Marlins out there to take a chance on this turkey.

I am up over 600 rounds now on the 464. Have replaced 3 broken extractors so far (am on my 4th). I will buy a couple extras to have on-hand as it seems to be the weak point.

However, I do love it. The Ackley chambering is a riot as well. Makes a rifle this light not as fun to shoot, if you push the velocity, however.
