It was a fun day. Son and friend for hunting pards. No shots fired. No poultry seen. Dogs worked hard and got "burred-up" good. Wet and muddy to boot. The floods of 2008 took the nests away. Harvest of corn is behind normal by a couple of weeks also.

I feel muscles that have not worked in awhile. Was "vest weather" all day. Dog has a bruised toe. Big bowl of food and a "baby aspirin" for her.
Son and I will dine on chille tonight. It was a real good day!

Glad to hear you had a good trip. Killing game is not nessesary for a good time, but it helps. Keep up the good work I'm sure you will connect.Q

Thanks for the reply Q-harley.

I would have liked for my son and his dog to have scored a rooster. That is my only regret. We had a good time. We hunted some of the best ground that I know in Grundy county(friend owns it). I have made my limit in under an hour there before with "old Blu".

Son's dog is a year old (golden retriever/lab mix) and she did well for her part. No birds at all.

We will try again when the harvest is done. Standing corn all over the place. The farmers are working at it as they can.

As a sidenote, while traveling on the job today I drove close enough to an eight point white tail to look into his eyes. Note to self, Carry a camera on the job!
Was a real fine looking buck.

It's pretty hard to get into birds when fields aren't harvested. Oh well, at least you got a day in the field. Better than nothing.

It sure is exciting when you're driving through standing corn and have a deer pass by only one or two rows over

We have a spot in Decatur county where last year i counted over 100+ birds on it. This year zero... its next to a cornfield that hasn't been picked... gotta love the weather that ruined it all. They got corn out today lol

There is still some standing corn around here. Not much though. Very few pheasants to be seen. A guy I work with reports harvesting a limit(3) last weekend someplace in northeast Iowa. I saw no feathers around his mouth and don't know him all that well, so I can't confirm that report?

I drive near fourty miles per day rural to and from work. I don't see them around me. We will give another try before the season close of January 10, 2009.

It is time to pay the 2009 "hunting tax" again. Fur, fish, and game was $67.50 in 2008. I added an $11.00 "trout stamp" to that. Total was $78.50 for the year.
No deer or turkey tag this year. I can't aford the time or money. I "guess" I'll call it a "donation" to the critters of the State of Iowa.

As a sidenote, I did catch my "personal biggest" catfish this year from a local stream. 12 lbs. from a river that would have trouble "floating a turd" during the summer in most years. That was fun.

Stay out there and keep huntin,
