View Full Version : MN Deer Hunting

Just spent the better half of the past two weeks and three weekends in the woods in Eastern MN deer hunting. I have to admit this was probably the worst in terms of weather and moon that I have seen in some time. Most days were windy enough to keep the deer down, the moon during the first week allowed the deer to play all night long, sleep during the day.

However, there seems to be more going on. This is the first year ever that I did not see deer, any deer at all. I hunt private land which has always had a good deer presence in the past. However, even the adjacent property owners note a huge decrease in the take this year. I heard the fewest shots in the woods since 2003 when it was 18 below on the opener. Something else that was extremely odd, I did not see any squirrels during the day. Typically I will see 5 to 10 grey and black squirrels, it was as though the woods were cleaned out. I spoke with other hunters that hunted land ranging from just North of the Twin Cities to the north border, from St. Cloud/ Brainard, east, including the arrowhead. They reported roughly the same, the harvest this year was way down.

In searching the area I noted a couple of scraps, but much less overall activity. My conclusion is that we have an overabundance of Timberwolves as well as a reported Cougar sighting in the area I hunt. I know the local DNR has tried trapping the Timberwolves based on local farmer complaints. My understanding is that he has trapped a couple but does not feel there was a problem. I did find some suspicious droppings in the woods as well as some tracks that were no coyotes by any means. That may explain the deer decrease, but I am not sure if that also explains the squirrels also.

I would sure like to hear about what others found in MN over the past few weeks. Because of the mild winters the deer population had increased the past few years. We got spoiled in the last 10 years, never had to spend many more than about 2 to 3 days in the woods to take home a nice freezer full of venison. Those days may be over.

I'm just south of you Brad S. I wonder if you had flooding or weather that affected planting like it did down here? Some land did not get planted at all. Made all the critters behave different than what I concider normal. Winter 2007/2008 was abit tougher than the previous several too.

I suspect that the current "mature" animals just don't have any experience with that? They "did" what they do best. Survive the day.

I'm not just speaking of deer here, I mean all of them. Wolves, squirrels, beaver, deer, etc. All critters. Fish, fur, and feathered.

Survive the day so as to make a new generation.

The flooding that hit Iowa in May and June missed us altogether. For the most part we had a rather normal year weather-wise, a bit dry for most of the summer. I can just imagine the impact on the wildlife in Iowa due to the flooding.

On a local radio station this morning, the commentators indicated that they had friends that hunt near Bemidji, Mn, the harvest was very low. The hunters indicated that they had heard more wolves howling than in previous years.

A DNR spokesman at a gun safety class I taught at last spring said that a wolf pack will take on average, one deer a week. :( That could decrease the population pretty quick

Just a couple years ago I hunted the early season antlerless near Bemidji and just on public land between me and the fella I was with successfully got three deer. We saw many more, however they were either on private property, were way out of range, or had a rack. Sounds odd... I wonder if there's any real figures on the wolf populations. I was amazed how much wildlife was around Bemidji in the small peices of public land.

No fear of wolves here. A few other preditors about though. Couger and coyote come to mind. I keep our dog on a 'tight leash" because of that.

Dog is dumb. Owner is not! There is magic in that combonation.
I'm armed fine for all of that.

We have had the same kind of conditions this year also. I hunt from the Red river and west on the ND side. Saw lots of yotes and a few stray MN wolves. We finally got our Deer but had to work at it harder than usual. Lot's of standing corn and sunflowers left. I think the population is down slightly but between the weather and the standing crops it was just tougher to get them. Gave up on trying to get a good buck and went to my land in SASK and got one there.

Yeah I'm from Lamoni, Iowa and crop is a pain here for pheasants. I'm cheap and live off game that I harvest. I love to eat squirrel, pheasant, deer, and turkey. Can't kill a squirrel since leaves were on later than normal this year. Pheasants are all in corn fields since they havn't gotten picked. Turkey season isn't till April. Deer I've had the darnest of luck this year. Spent atleast 4 weekends in stands with bow... hopefully shotgun and muzzle loader will produce for me. I got like 3 or 4 farm tags aswell =]

All in all, the flood screwed the whole state up.

Here in WI there is a late Dec 11 to 14th statewide 4-day antlerless Gun season.
Here in the SW area we have plenty of snow & I'm thinking about going out later in the afternoon.

If I can find a food source in DNR land, the cold weather might bring them out to feed earlier in the evening. I would like to test these 100-gr Remington Corelokt Ultra Bonded bullets that I hand-loaded for my 243 WIN & 243/06 Wildcat rifles, & get a deer or two to feed the hungry.

Shooting a doe will earn you a buck for next years earn-a-buck season. :)
