Welcome to the forum. Smith and Wesson 22a? I'm not 100% familiar with that gun. Does the top of the receiver have grooves about 3/8" of an inch apart, parallel to the bore? If so that would indicate the usual .22 rimfire rings.

If it already has a base, then odds are it is for a Weaver-style rings. If there outside edges of the base are somewhat triangular in profile, and there are cross-slots cut in it, that would probably be for standard Weaver-style rings.

If not, then you have to find a base that fits it, and rings to fit the base. If it needs a base then there should be several screw holes through the top of the receiver. They may be filled with plug screws (screws with no heads and a tiny slot to remove them).

Pictures might help.

The S&W 22A has an integral rib for mounting weaver style rings, the rib runs basically the entire length of the receiver/barrel.
I haven't put a scope on mine yet, but as my eyesight isn't getting better as the years go by it may come to that.

If your red dot has the intergal base like mine, I had to cut it with a dremel tool on the right side to get it to work. It was the only way to mount it to my 22a and not have to buy a scope that used a ring setup.
