I have decided on getting the LEE Anniversary Kit so that I can reload for my 45/70. Does anyone know the part# for the die set for a 45/70? I would like a factory crimp...

Go to the Lee Precision web site it is comprehensive and has all part #'s or go to Midway or Natchez or Midsouth or where ever you are buying it from. By the way there is no better way to get into reloading. Congratulations.

Dogman, the part # is 90561 for the Paceseter Set, but it does NOT include the Factory Crimp Die.

The Factory Crimp Die is part# 90856 for 45/70 Govt.
I looked to see if they had the Deluze Rifle Set (they don;t), so I don;t suppose you can get the Collet Die. BUT! If you call Lee, maybe they'll make one for you if you want it. On this page, it even says to see their customer service pages if your caliber is not listed.

Do I need the pacesetter set or can I just buy the Factory crimp die?

You don;t need the Pacesetter dies IF you already have dies. If you have dies but are just looking for the Crimp die, then that's all you need. I don;t know much about the 45/70, except that I shot a "trap-door" Springfield at the range a month ago. Do you have to crimp that cartridge? I mean, is it a "must" crimp round?
Anyway, I also bought the Breech Lock Challenger kit several months ago. I can;t remember if a die set is included in the Kit, but whether it is or not, if you don;t already have dies, you will have to get them. For the 45/70, that means the Pacesetter Kit which, in that particular caliber, does not come with the crimp die.

45/70 only needs to be crimped for lever action rifles to keep the bullet from moving in the (tubular) magazine, and for the revolvers because of the intense recoil. Single feed rifles and pistols (Contender, Ruger #1) and bold actions do not need to be crimped.
The Lee 3 die set covers the needs of the single feed and the bolt actions. If you need to crimp for lever action or revolver get the Factory Crimp Die, it is all of $11 in addition to a $25 die set. This what I use for my Marlin 95 and it works exceptionally well for me.

I have found that both of my 45-70s REQUIRE an aggressive crimp. This is especially true of my short barreled marlin 1895 when I load using 3031 or similar. When I first started loading I had what i would term a "french crimp" and ended up with a near stack fire from the unburned powder. The muzzle flash late in the evening was impressive but i did not get efficient ignition or accuracy until I started putting a very aggressive roll crimp on the cartridge. I have since moved to Lee factory crimp on all my loads and love the tool.

I'm with StretchNM get the Breech Lock Challenger kit as you set up the dies once and then swap out the retaining rings. Seems like a real nice feature. Another option is the 4 hole Turret press which has a similar set up as you set up the dies and can swap out the turret rings without having to reset them. Just order the factory crimp die seperately as you will want a factory crimp in most every application.
