View Full Version : Lyman Case Trimmer handle spinning?

Thanks to this forum, I was finally able to figure out about the chuck on my Lyman case trimmer. I had to unscrew the little stick in the chuck to turn it further in order to lock the case in place. Now, it seems that the handle spins while trying to cut down the neck. There is no screw on the handle to tighten and it seems it is an integral part of the longer shaft. Is this normal? Is there some trick I am missing?
thanks again.

If you mean the handle arm that's swaged and peened onto the turner shaft, seems it's stripped. If so, you have two choices, buy a new shaft/handle unit OR fix it. It could be electric MIG arc welded, just a light half second tap against the place where it's spinning should do it.
To correct your shell holder chuck, loosen the large nut at the left end of the holder shaft. Rotate the whole thing towards you a quarter turn or enough so the little "stick" can be replaced when a case is locked in and retighten the nut.

Thanks a bunch. I figured that the large nut holding the chuck in place was probably the key to readjusting so that I could get the stick back on correctly and will fiddle with it tonight. The news about the handle is disheartening. I was hoping you would say it was designed that way and there was some adjustment. I don't have an arc welder (and don't know anyone who does), so am wondering where I may purchase a replacement? I was also reading that there is a version that can be attached to an electric drill. Could that be purchased instead and thus make it even easier?

Yes.
You can likely get a brief touch of arc from a decent mig welder at any muffler shop for free or not very much; worth a try. Just take the shaft and handle assembly with you and ask for a fix. ??
