I have one of those guns myself and it has puzzled me too. I don't think it prohibits operation of the gun though.

Look in the bigger hole.

Do you see a small pin, in the side of the bolt (inside) ?

The pin connects the tip of the operating lever to the bolt.

The pin is removed during takedown, via drifting it out of the bolt, using a small drift pin through the small hole opposite - so the bolt may be removed for cleaning and/or repair.

Winchester 94's have the same setup with a cover/screwhead that fills the larger hole on those rifles.

I never had a Mossy, but I'm surprised it's not in your owner's manual, or at the very least illustrated in the exploded parts diagram that's usually part of most manuals.

Rangr, thanks !

For those of us that are just learning, do you, or anyone,
have a suggested source for complete take-down
instructions for the Mossberg ?

If not, I'll call Mossberg and will post what they advise.

(There is nothing like this accompanied with the purchase
package)

The Mossy 464 owner's manual can be downloaded from the Mossberg site, but I've hyperlinked it's pdf below.

Scroll waaaay down part the parts listing page to the illustrated parts diagram.

Part #6 is the lever bolt pin, I described earlier.

FYI - EVERY firearm manufacturer, upon request, will supply the owner's manual to ANY firearm they make - regardless whether or not the said gun was purchased new or used.

It's a legal/safety/liability issue, if an owner is not supplied with one - either with the arm or later.

The owner's manual says, "Normal maintenance of your Mossberg 464

Lever Action does not require any disassembly....."

Yes, there is an exploded parts illustration, but no disassembly

and reassembly sequence instruction whatsoever. That reference

is sorely needed.

I doubt that Mossberg will furnish what's needed, but I'll call and

see.

I'm not going to hold my breath, but the service department

at Mossberg (800 363-3555) say that someone would call

me back.

My question was, "If my 464 is so dirty that disassembly

is necessary, is there a supplemental manual with

instructions on how to disassemble and re-assemble?"

I was asked for name and number....We shall see.

I have taken my 464 apart 3 or 4 times. Mostly to replace broken extractors.

LOOSEN the screw on the bottom of the receiver, just fore of the lever.
- This will allow you to remove the forward pin.
Remove the forward pin.

Drive the bolt's pin out as you have discovered by aligning the bolt with the two receiver holes. (Drive from the smaller hole.)

You should be able to remove the lever and bolt completely now, by working the lever, disconnecting the lever from the bolt, and disconnecting the bottom of the receiver from the rear locking block. (It slides forward.) Bolt will come out the rear (draw the hammer all the way back to get it out of the way.)

I was even able to fit a chamber reamer through the end of the now open receiver, and re-chamber to 30-30AI. It's a great little rifle, isn't it?

I'd say so.

Been reading 464 threads on several boards, I have been thinking about buying one. My take on what I have read is that the early models had extractor problems but they have been fixed on later production.
