In the past I would go to the town clerk and buy it over the counter. In Massachusetts you can do that at any time including during the hunting season itself.

For the past couple of years I have bought my license on-line. The way the system works here is that you go to the website and fill out all the pertinent data. After you make the transaction a license will be mailed to you within a week or so.

Connecticut is even easier. I bought the archery licenses for my father and I. After filling out the pertinent data and making the payment the license is printed out on your computer's printer and viola. You have your hunting license in hand. I just printed out the tags, four deer tags apiece. In addition, I will print out the fall turkey tags. Two birds of either sex.

Is your licensing system easy or do you have to go through a few hoops?

That is pretty neat.

We have to pick up the Texas license at a retailer (sporting good stores), or order it and wait for it to arrive in the mail. However, the paper(?) it comes on is shiny and slick, and the ink won't run when it gets blood on a tag. Can't tear the stuff, either. So that makes it worthwhile to me. I've attached tags with tape, zip ties, wire, string, and one one trip, sheetrock screws into an ear (what happens when you are driving te work truck and can't find anything else to use) :D

Those Texas licenses have a lot of mule deer and whitetail tags, plus turkey and small game. Alas, being a non-res, I have to order mine off the internet - total cost of $320. Good until August of 2010.

Another reason to migrate there, eh, Mike? :p

Maine: Go online to www.mefishwildlife.com (http://www.mefishwildlife.com) Go through the questions, checking what license(s) and permits you want. Print license. I print up extras and put them in truck, different jackets, etc. That way I don't have to keep shifting it around, as I don't carry a wallet when hunting.
