Through a quirky set of circumstances, a Navy Arms/Uberti 1860 Henry rifle in.44-40 has fallen into my hands this week, along with dies, 50 rounds of brass, and a bunch of 205 gr. Keith-style cast bullets. Since the sequel to this circumstance should be quite clear to most readers of this forum, I'll cut to the chase.
The second load I checked, 9 gr. Unique, performs splendidly. My chrono is busted, but I get the impression I'm getting around 1100 fps. Recoil in this heavy rifle is nil.
I've not had time to get out to the 100 yard range, but at the 40 yards I can manage in my side yard three-shot groups are under 2" from seated-on-the-ground position.
The gun season here starts in about a week, and there are numerous deer at the heavily-wooded back corner of my property that are just begging for me to be there with this rifle.
